Let's say I have my own T3 line for free. What costs are involved in being your own webhost? What all hardware/software would you need?

Just so everyone has a Heads up, Netscape Navigator 6 was released in final version today, and NS is starting to push it. While I'm not too happy with the browser from a consumer point of view (I just plain don't like it.), I am rather happy with it from a developer's point of view. It's use of CSS is MUCH better, and it supports the much beloved by advertisers IFRAME tag. Anyone else happy with this release as a developer?

routers, switches, hubs, servers, racks, 24/7/365 monitoring tools, yada yada yada....overall if you can it's best to start colo'ing somewhere else till you can afford the rest.

Here's a C|net page describing what NS6 supports: quote: It almost fully supports the standards for HTML 4.0, XML 1.0, CSS1, key parts of CSS2, ECMA-262, and the Level 1 DOM.

permissions can be set using your ftp program or the file editor your host has. doing through a file editor is probably the easiest for a beginner, but not the quickiest way. look for something that says "chmod" or "permissions".good luck

You can get it all for free at excelland.com or northsky.com; they host communities for free.

I just downloaded Netscape 6 ... and it's speedy. It also converted all my old NS files quickly. Interesting.NICE implementation of CSS ... (font sizes now display same as in IE, for instance). Some things are a little different than 4.6x though ... Guess I may have a little work to do.

hmmm, lost me.I'll expand a bit. I'm trying to upload a banner rotation script to my site and it says I need to change the permissions to 7something. I'm using Wordpad to edit the cgi and to be honest I don't really know what I'm doing. When I uploaded it I got an error trying to access it and assumed this was because I hadn't done this properly. I'm completely lost and I'd really like a step by step simple speak guide. Pleaseeeee Thanks Becki

Well, I'm running a webserver off of a DSL line using only a hub and my computer but I don't know if that is the favorable approach...

Okay, when I start up NS6, it immediately tries to access the Web, then tries to set "a second cookie" (hm), among other things. An "Activation" screen pops up; I think they want me to register ... but I don't think I want to, especially after that "second cookie" and accessing the Web business. (Hmmm.) That depends on the answer to one question. Does it fit your needs?I am always a bit hesitant to put a web site on a DSL line. They have been proving to be reliable, but they have more down time than other solutions like a T1 line. That being said ..... Back in the old days I had a web site that I hosted using a 33.6 Modem. I also used that modem to surf the web. My profit margin was greater with that site than it ever has been since. It cost me about $50 a month and I was making $500 a month. That is 10 times what I was paying. So, when I thought it was the right time I switched from my 33.6 modem to a Fractional T1 Line at 128Kbps. Then I was making $1,000 a month and paying $800 a month. Still making a profit, but was it worth it? Now I am paying for a full 1.5Mb T1 line, I make enough money to live and I re-invest every penny I have into some projects that I am working. I have more servers than I care to mention in this post and everything is paid for every month. BUT, I am breaking even. NO PROFIT. So here the question: Was running a website off of a 33.6 mode a favorable approach? It got me where I am today, made me my own boss and I have a major project that I am trying to get out for the 1st of the year that will hopefully take me to the next level. What do you think my answer to this question is?

I haven't had a chance to download yet, but thought I'd recomend that anyone who previously installed ANY of the beta versions completely uninstall that version prior to installing the final. Always best to start with a clean slate to get good performance.Interesting Diane...I'll watch for that when I install so we can compare notes!

I use cable. This costs me around $50/month flat fee for a 128k line.I get a single fixed IP. I pointed this IP to the external NIC of a server with IIS (web server) and Merak Mail. With this solution I am currently hosting 30+ web sites of clients without any problem. I use Host headers in HTTP 1.1 for multiple domains on one IP.

Okay. It does have a neat feature/window where you can inspect the cookies that have been set ... and delete them. (And this is not just the "one" cookie that you can usually see.) It's just that the ... er, monitoring activities are a little too much for me. I know this is a free product, but I would be willing to pay money for a non-monitored version.

Advice : Keep Northsky as your last option. They are not that reliable.

My opinions are about the same as your Silv, to me the browser looks too much like an AOLish interface, but the support for standards are a lot better.

Jokes, if you have access to a T3 for free, I presume they have a router allready and static IP's, then all you really need is a single linux box running apache, named and qmail. I really wouldn't suggest one box though. (really two) I have been using ISDN 128k for the past year running over 30 domains so now it finally pays for itself. Be aware though it is alot of work to get it running and then a lot of work to keep it secure but it is nice to have the web server on the other side of our network.Mike [Moderator Note: We don't allow signature in here. -SimpleEnigma] [This message has been edited by SimpleEnigma (edited 01-25-2001).]
