I have gotten this site as a referal a few times and I can't find my link on their site. This is exactly how it shows in my log but I get a 404 error page when trying to access the address

clicksitebuilder.com/services94750.html

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I have noticed many 'logfile spammers'. Their server runs a script to call our pages. We see the referral and check it out. Many times its just an advertising page telling us how to get a zillion visitors a day for $19.95 a month.

Echo Yellowing: I really wouldn't worry about it.. if it's always coming from the same IP either block them or setup a contact page just for that IP and redirect that IP to the contact page and ask them what the page is...

I too am having this same problem. I have a porn site and a golf site, both showing up with MANY different pages shown as "linking" to our site. When I check, there is no link. Also, since I'm doing all my own links by hand, I know for sure these are not link partners.

Is there any concern here? Are they somehow "using" my site or bandwidth? I'm not super technical, so I didn't exactly understand the term "log spammers".

Any help or guideance is appreciated. Bottom line: Do I need to be concerned?

This could be of concern - i.e. a bad site (i.e. one that has been penalized by say, Google) links to your site then places a link to the bad site in your log file. Are entries linking to say, the porn site, also appearing in your logs?

If so, are your log files located in a directory that can be spidered? If not, then you have no problem. If so, then use the robots.txt file to ask robots not to spider the log file or Webstats directory eg:

Disallow: /webstats

Then the log spammers have wasted their time, as they get no benefit whatsoever and you don't risk being associated with a "bad neighbourhood".

Ask your Web host whether the logfiles or stats files are located in a directory which can be spidered by googlebot.

Thank you so much for answering. I just got back from a trip, so I couldn't answer before now.

The entries are appearing in my AWStats under "Links from an external page". It looks like I'm linked to them in some way, which is not by my choice. I have access to my Cpanel and I found my stats files and they are in a folder called /tmp which is in the same root folder as my website's folder /public_html. I tried accessing /tmp from my browser, but it won't let me, so I'm not sure if it's public or not. Maybe the hackers know a different way.

I don't have a robots.txt file and I don't know how to make one. I guess I should look into that.

In the meantime, I found out the IP address of each of the two offending sites and did and IP Ban. I hope this will do something. I'm really at the limits of my abilities here.

Thank you again for all your help.

Here are a couple of URLs to go to:
http://www.robotstxt.org/wc/faq.html
http://www.learninglinux.com/modules.php?name=News&file=print&sid=27

The first gives some background on Robots exclusion and the second gives specific examples of what to put in your robots.txt file and how to write it. smile

Wow! Thank you, again! That "Learning Linux" link is phenomenal. I'll be creating my robots.txt file today! smile
