I just checked a clients Urchin referral errors to find 2,799 hits, 99% + of the traffic experienced a "301" referral error with (no referal) as the source.

What does this mean? I cannot find a detailed explanation anywhere.

I am trying to determine if this had anything to do with a complete drop of the site from Yahoo and MSN over the weekend.

Thanks for your help,
Greg

Excellent question.

301 refers to content which has permanently moved, so maybe there was content moved and the 301 redirect code was imporperly implmented? That is, the system was being told it was "301", yet the link to the new "home" for the content was broken?

Just a guess, but it might be a place to start.

I have never heard of this issue until now.

Is this just a bot hitting non-www URLs and being redirected to the www version of every page?

How can I send a 301 error signal out from the web server? Can I use header() function of PHP to do so?
