Just getting a thread started in here for the new JimGuides concept from this week's Gazette so that folks can share their thoughts. We'd love to hear what you think.

The JimWorld newsletter arrived today.
The JimGuides concept is a step forward, but I don't think much will change around here if the same archaic rules stay in place (along with the same type of moderation.)
Sadly, the forums will never surpass a site such as www.sitepointforums.com, because of rules such as No Signature Files. Why would anyone post messages and generate content for your site, if they are unable to promote their own site?
And why didn't you choose to use vbulletin?

Robert, I was a moderator here for 2 years, and I don't believe we have met. I certainly hope I never "moderated" you or anyone for that matter unfairly. But I'm only human. I disagree with your comment about Signature Files, as you know we have never allowed the use of sig files, and when http://www.webmasterworld.com started a few years ago, they agreed with that concept and like us, are still here, helping new webmasters, and providing the space and environment for some of the old hands as well. We believe it provides a cleaner look, less clutter, and community truly based on helping others without personal gain.
As for the software, it was written by John Cokos and we are more than willing to give him the time required to customize the board to what we want it to be. And we want a lot. So much, that nothing but a custom job will do.
We have new Admins, new software, and strong community spirit given to us by this boards founder Jim Wilson.
We still have many challenges and plans to face and complete. I hope you will be part of the solution.

You've obviously not been around here much recently, if you're still referring to "The same old moderation". Things (attitudes) have changed drastically around here of late, and the Guides concept is simply an extension of our desire to not be heavy handed, but rather be even more informative than ever.
One simple reason for no sigs (and no icons) ... they're not essential, and serve no purpose, other than to distract. Forums that allow sigs and icons are terribly busy, distracting, and repetitive. Here, we're all about the content. We don't exist as another avenue for you to promote yourself, we exist to teach, period.
In our opinion, sigs can easily dominate a page and distract the reader from what's actually going on in the discussion. It's quite easy to click on the posters name and see their full "signature" there, on their profile page. Frankly I don't need to see your tagline and URL on every single post you make, and nobody else does either. We're perfectly capable of viewing your profile IF we want to.
Our way may seem archaic, but we easily have the most professional looking copy out there, it's easy to read, and easy to follow.
As far as vbulletin goes, the primary reason for not using them was twofold:
1. They could not properly import our old UBB database, which means we would have lost about 150,000 posts if we made the switch.
2. They could not integrate with our existing members database. Your login and password here at the forums is valid for all of the other (and upcoming) Jimworld areas, and it was imperative that we keep that information in a common area. Since VB wouldn't work (and told us so) in that type of setup, we were forced into a situation where we had to roll our own.
It's evolving, it'll never be for sale, and it's ours.... as time goes on, these forums will feel just like home.

Why would anyone post messages and generate content for your site, if they are unable to promote their own site? Just thought I'd take a moment to point this out.. No where does it say you can't promote your own site, you just can't do it in the threads - that's what your profile is for. As profiles are commonplace in forum environments even new members (unless they are new to forums in general) know to look there for more info about *you*. New members eventually get the idea and view profiles as need or curiosity arises.

Visiting a good forum has never been (and should never be) about promoting a site unless it is part of a thread or you truely believe it may be of benefit to anyone reading the thread.
I had a look for a comment (unsuccessfully) that I've seen on a few sites (including this one somewhere) in that nothing is really free. This forum provides expert opinions and information about specialist topics and the only thing you have to pay is any help you can give (or opinion)to someone who asks for it and common courtesy.
Now is that a bargain or what

Daminc, the comment you're looking for is the one we put at the end of every Gazette issue. Here it is:
====================================
Payment Due Notice
====================================
The Gazette, JimWorld, and our Forums are NOT FREE. They are what we call "Helpware." This means that you are granted the right to participate, read, and learn from us, if you agree to contribute. Learn something, from here or anywhere else, and pass it on. If you see a Webmaster who's struggling, help them up. If you see someone making a mistake, offer some fix-it advice. In short, you get out of JimWorld, and the Internet, what you put into it. The more you give, the more you get. Even if you get nothing in return, it's important that you share. Karma always comes back around. We don't allow "Takers" here, so get with the program, and help each other. Together, we can make the Internet a better place... and right now, it's in a sad state. It's up to you, me, and everyone reading this to fix it. In short, don't pay us -- pay everyone.

Hi Robert,
I'm an on-again/off-again old-timer around here. I was once a moderator, but don't have the time to spend anymore. The "old" moderation practices of which you speak never quite got me to throw in the towel, and I'm glad I didn't, because since then, jcokos, thejenn, and most of the old moderators who were never part of the problem have won me over.
As John says, this is a totally new place attitude-wise -- yet with all of what was best about JimWorld that attracted me in the first place preserved. What little time I do have to spend around search engine Web forums, I find myself spending here.
Regarding John's custom software for the forum, I enjoyed seeing forum software implemented under our noses on an ongoing, active forum like this. Due to the difficulty of pulling of something like that, I half expected it to fail, and the fact that it didn't fail, turned out quite good, and continues to improve is a good sign for the forum. It might have only recently caught up with other forum's basic functionality, but soon, I expect having the inventor of the forum software also as the Admin will turn into unique advantages.
Anyway, my opinion of the new regime here, AND the old-timers who are still around continues to go up.
