Here is an interesting article from Paul J. Bruemmer and clickz. Which acronym should we use? And, are we charging enough for our services?

SEO vs. SEP

SEO - Search Engine Optimization
vs.
SEP - Search Engine Positioning

Ok, I've got a confession to make. I'm English. There I've said it.

Most of the times I can figure you American guys out pretty fine but when it comes down to language, you change things around a bit, miss perfectly good letters out.....

So what I basically asking, is do you guys use the word 'fancy' - as in take a romantic interest in someone? As in "I really fancy that person."?

Is it used widely enough that everyone would understand it? Is it a popular word or is is considered out of date?

Reason I'm asking is that I've got a perfect name for a site but want to know if it'd work over in America.

Thanks!

Quite an interesting article. An excellent starting point to discuss the evolution of the Search Engine “Utilization” Industry. I think it’s a great illustration of the Industry’s adapting to a changing Search Engine climate. Pay-for-placement usage has surged, inclusion programs are here to stay and they way of the future, premium listings, sponsored links, etc. PPC campaigns coupled with other Branding and marketing tactics to form a more complete strategy. Online marketing efforts known as Search Engine Optimization have grown and broadened into Placement Campaigns.

It’s often illuminating to hear someone say “out loud” what has been happening right in front of your face. SEO companies have changed what they do and how they charge, as well as how they place and market their client’s brand, they’ve had to in order to survive.

What I did find somewhat strange was the point regarding submission software. I think that topic is quickly becoming a mute point. Paid inclusion and paid submission programs, run by the engines, is the way of the future. I think there will always remain a way for submissions to be made free to some engines. However, the serious online marketing will utilize ALL the inclusion programs. Submission software, resident on the individual computer, will be obsolete as an effective tool before this time next year.

We do not use it that way AT ALL. Never. Not even out of date. I am familier only because I have Brit friends who fancy this and fancy that.

It is used here to discribe "dressier then normal". A restraunt can be fancy, as can a girls Easter dress. We would not say "I fancy a donut." But, my daughter might call a donot with decorations "a fancy donut."

It is a good argument for SEP. Agree with Praxis's point that the nature of the work is more of a Placement Campaign. Over the last year I have found that my work has moved very much into the realm of broader campains.

I don't know if that is just my office or is this a larger industry trend?

I sometimes use it...

... but I'm Canadian
... and not for romantic interest, but for interest in general.

Seriously, though, Americans would know how it's being used in that context when they hear or read it, but I don't think they use it in everyday life, especially to denote romantic interest.

>> Which acronym should we use

Both ...

currently with google i am doing SEP by created partner ships with other web sites on speific terms ...

currently with inktomi, SEO (using time honered methods to optimize the page for keywords) and then let the keyword phases fall into the cracks which get traffic when there are no directory of paid spots on the inktomi portals. without focusing on any one keyword instead a theme of keyword phases. some SEP for key iwon.com phases.

A donut. I need my morning coffee still. And an English muffin (yes, I know, "a what?").

Thanks for your replies Janet and NEntropy.

Ok, so if you don't use fancy, what can I use in its place?

I'm looking for a word which says you're attracted to someone. I'm looking at 18-30 age group as well, so if its modern, all the better.

Say for example, new real cute person starts where you work, what you say instead of, "I fancy XYZ."?

Oh, and clean too

Thanks for your help. You know, I watch loads of American cult tv like Friends, Frasier, Sex in the City, Ally McBeal... and I just can't think of a word.

Hey, I know what you should use!

Oh. You said it has to be clean?

Dunno then.

you could use "dig," as in "i dig that fancy donut."

young people used "dig" about 35-40 years ago. then it was out-dated for a while, but it is back again. kind of.

it would work for romantic interest, it is really just slang terminology for saying "I like it"

I like the fancy donut. but that seems kinda tame.

Would have "a crush on" work, to me that is much more than "a fancy" which by the way we in Australia use along with "tickled my fancy" which could be very badly misinterpreted to a merican.
Hey Janet you do know that biscuits are scones, cookies are biscuits and crackers are dry biscuits and, don't you?

And just don't get me started on cream and milk egad.. I was asked if I want cream in my coffee and fully expected to get it.... geez what a let down!

Thanks excell but I'm kind of after a one word thing. A one word, well recognised verb would be perfect.

This is turning out to be the most difficult part of the site.

Any more suggestions?

Canadians don't really use words like that in the context you're speaking of either. We don't 'fancy' something but we would say "Hey you know what I'd really like?" or "really want?". As far as a verb describing a person, it sort of depends on who you talk to. I've heard all of these words in combination with "that guy is":

-sick (meaning exceptionally hot)
-hot
-the man
-the package
-the bomb

just to name a few..

I recommend the word "fancy." True, it is not really part of the vernacular anymore, but people DO understand its use in that context. The reason you should use it is because it is not necessarily common, and thus people are more likely to remember it and pay attention. The best marketing gets attention and forces people to think for just a second or two about what they are looking at.

One *minor* consideration is that some may perceive it with a homosexual overtone (not that there's anything wrong with that!) so it may confuse some people if you are designing a romantic site.

Thanks tasmith. Its more of an online lighthearted flirting site than a intense romance thing. Would fancy work in that context?

Freeplay - Exactly.

And I agree completely with Tasmith's well articulated response.
