ok very wierd question, but i wondered if anyone else here has been in a car crash lately. I was in one today and kinda wanted to talk about it. I pulled across a lane and didnt see this guy coming the other way. No-one was hurt but its gonna cost me aroun $500 to fix his car ( dont know what mine will be ). I suppose everyone will be in some sort of accident sooner or later ( this was my first one ). Oh well life goes on.

Yeah, being in a wreck sucks, even a minor one. I backed into a light pole once at a pretty good clip, if that counts. Scared the heck out of me (I had looked behind me, but the lights of a filling station had "mirrored" my back windshield and I hadn't seen anything). I was terrified that I had hit a skateboarder or something. Made my cheesy old car disposable, too, as the trunk-centered gas fill was ground zero for the impact and you couldn't get to it to refill the tank after the hit. smile Luckily, I had a friend who managed to beat out the worst of the dent and enable me to gas up a week or so later.

Funny crash story -

My mom is a complete lunatic nutcase on the road. She is permanently in a high state of terror when driving and actually ends up putting herself and others at greater risk by doing things like driving on the Interstate at 45 mph in a 75 zone and reflexively swerving out of the way of turning-in traffic in parking lots, even though they are many yards away. That being said, she's only been in two real wrecks that I know of - one when we were little kids and this one:

(Note: Necessary backstory - at the same time as this story, she had a black lab that she had named God ('dog', backwards) in a fit of irreverent pique - pretty much a permanent state of pique, actually. They were best buds and as often as not, wherever Mom went she took God along with her for a ride and a burger.)

Well, one day, her worst nightmare came true when icy roads caught a newbie driver off guard and he slid across the centerline head-on into Mom. Since everyone had been sensibly scootching along at a crawl anyway, no one was seriously injured (and she was alone in the car, dog-wise), but Mom did have a mild concussion and some facial cuts, so she was taken by ambulance to the emergency room for a look-see.

Being mildly concussed and badly shaken, she was babbling somewhat by the time she was rolled in on the stretcher, and the serious-minded folks in this Bible-Belt-area ER (staff and waiting patients) were flabbergasted to hear her moaning over and over....

"Thank goodness God wasn't with me...Oh, I'm so glad I didn't have God in the car..."

thomkilroy, your story about your Mom driving is funny. Completely opposite of my grandfather. They used to call him Zippy because he drove 55 mph. Everywhere. Oh yeah on the highway is fine, but try that in the city streets. Eek!

I was in a car crash back in 1982. Got hit my a drunk driver head on. I went through the dashboard and hit the windshield with my head. The car was mangled in the front end. Fortunately, other than some cuts and bruises, the only major thing happened was that the last metatarsal in my right foot got crushed. Nonrepairable unless major surgery. I'm sure I'll end up with arthritis later on.

What really boggles my mind is that things could have turned out worse. I didn't see it coming. I was looking at Christmas lights on a restaurant out the window. The doctor said that if my head wasn't turned and I hit straight on, I wouldn't be here talking with you guys... It was a "smack upside the head" lesson to learn early on. I appreciate every day.

smile

I hit a stationary car at 60mph about three years ago.

It can make you a better driver. A good thing can come from a bad experience.

My father once crashed 2 times in a week, first time a car pulled out in front of him (he was on a motorbike), second time he was a bit shaken up so he was driving slowly. When he came around he was told he slipped on some oil.

Everytime i've been with him he always drives sensibly so I don't think they were entirely his fault.

These things happen, crashes happen all the time, this is why the idea of insurance is here.

I was driving up to my house one day, at night... starting to slow down... doing about 15mph... when a black dog ran out between two cars, which were parked on the road I was driving down, just in front of my car.

As soon I saw the dog, I hit the brakes… but felt the dog 'hit' my tire...

Needless to say that I s**t myself! As i looked at the owner, who was coming over i noticed that the dog was with her... she came over and apologized for the dog running out in front of me!!!!

I was saying that i was relieved that he was ok... and that she didn’t need to apologized at all!!!! I think the dog ended up having slightly bruised ribs, but the dog ended up making a full recovery!

When i though about it after, i realized that i couldn't have done anything else to stop the car any quicker...

Luckily, i was slowing down to park away... but 'that' feeling of knowing that you have hit someone is something i wouldn't want anyone to experience...

sad On this same topic, my 85 year old grandfather accidently ran over his 15 year old Brittney Spaniel over the weekend. He'd given her a treat and got in the car with my grandmother and when he backed up, the dog had managed to get itself behind the front wheel without my grandfather seeing it. She died pretty much immediately.

Poor guy, he's really broken up, she was his absolute best friend. On the *maybe* bright side, she'd been in really bad shape for over a year. She had a tumor that they couldn't remove because the dog wasn't healthy enough to operate on, and the vet had been trying to get them to put the dog down anyway...just really sad that grandma now has to live with knowing he did it. sad
