I got burned on paypal years ago when I didn't know that paypal basically let anyone with a credit card commit fraud with no consequence.

They call me asking if I would add it to my site for a payment option.

Good God that poor man got a mouthful.

My view is that Paypal is a funnel for fraud, a gaping hole in e commerce security, and at best, an amateur solution for online payments.

I agree with you Rezac. I used to own a website where I performed consulting services and accepted PayPal. If someone complained to PayPal that they didn't receive the services, or called their CC - PayPal's blanket agreement with the CC's allowed them to take the funds away with me. They would always ask for a shipping confirmation number - HELLO - NOT EVERY GOOD IS MAILED MORONS!

But doesn't the same thing happen with Visa or MC? Can't people charge back just as easily?

No they can't. Like, say in my case, I use Auth.net and they actually tend to favor the merchant more than the customer.

I as a merchant get to argue it and prove if I'm right or wrong before the customer gets his money back.

As opposed to paypal, which just yanks the money out of your account some magical morning.

The thing is, after paypal gets their juice from a transaction, you end up paying just as much in fees if you could take visa and mc directly.

I take Visa and MC directly, and I get chargeback's regardless of proof of delivery. The rule is, if you don't have a receipt with the customer signature, they can chargeback. And the best part is, they charge me 3 percent for a mail order merchant account!

Most company's selling big ticket items, will fax you for your sig.

Don't get me wrong, I don't get a lot of chargeback's. I'm in a business that deals with a small nitch market, and these type of people are very honest. But when it happens, I get a fax from Moneris, the customer swears on a stack of bibles that they didn't receive the product and that they tried to contact us and we didn't respond. We do respond, and once in a blue moon we don't have delivery confirmation. Regardless, Moneris will do the chargeback.

I do accept paypal as well, and have only had 2 chargeback's, and both were from direct bank account fraud. In other words, credit cards were not used, for some reason the bank itself somehow reversed the charge and, yes, paypal allowed it and was not helpful in giving an explanation.

But I get too much benefit from accepting paypal to throw the baby out with the bathwater, same with Moneris. Can't make sales without them.

On one hand, it's too easy for people to chargeback, but on the other hand, if it wasn't, would people buy on the Internet as much as they do?

    I can see your point.

There are markets that probably use it more than others.
