The Forums will be undergoing a few changes over the next couple of weeks, which I'd like to highlight here.
First, we'll be doing a redesign. The new design will introduce a new logo, as well as be quite a bit "skinnier" than before. Rather than go full width, we're squashing it down to fit in an 800 pixel wide window. For those of you browsing in an 800x600 resolution, you'll not notice this, but the rest of you will find that the forums being less wide greatly enhances their readability. In addition to the new basic design, we will be giving you a lot more control over how the forums work and appear to you. Specifically, you'll be able to select your favorite color scheme, most comfortable text size, and will be able to decide how many posts/topics you want shown on each screen of the forums. There will be a few more nifty features added in as well to make the overall experience in the forums not only more fun, but ultimately, more useful. We will be phasing in these changes over the next 2 to 3 weeks. As new features are rolled out, I'll be making them known in the Members Lounge, and will summarize them in the next Gazette.

Excellent. The default theme might want to have a font size quite a lot bigger than what's current - most web people have got honking big monitors geared up to a fairly high resolution, I'd guess, and on this monitor (1280 x 1024, 18" the letters look a bit like ants. True that users can just ratchet up the text size - but many don't, and your forum board makes a better first impression that way.
Look forward to your redesign, and hope you enjoy doing it.

Essentially the new forum layout is just like those, but with their own logo, and NO ADS on the right side. Ads in the forums are probably going to be up in the header.

Thanks for the peek! Main text font could still be larger though, causing quite some eyestrain and I've got close to 20 / 20 vision. Set your own monitor to honking-big resolution and check out how it looks.

I keep mine at 1280x1024 all the time, and the words are perfect for me. I think that it's all set to 9pt in CSS
Doesn't matter, though ... you'll be able to select all that from the options page soon enough.

I remember from somewhere here (maybe it was crash who brought it up?) that using ems is better than hardcoding the point size because it allows more flexibility for those who prefer to set the font size in their browser.
I'm okay in IE with fonts set to "medium", but in Firefox my font is set to 16 pixels and that's a bit squinty here at JimWorld so I usually have to "control +" it up a notch.

I will switch it to ems like we did before.
The trouble with those, is that they're very touchy.
.9ems is tiny, but 1ems is HUGE. The middle ground is very, very hard to reach with them, especially for mac people.

The problem, of course, is that pixels don't easily translate to ems or percentages. If it takes ten pixels to make a character, setting font size to 75 percent presents an obvious problem -- the browser can either use seven pixels or eight pixels, but it can never use seven and a half pixels. That leads to approximations and that, of course, leads to differences in approximations.
Fortunately, while there is no perfect solution, Owen Briggs invested a whole LOT of time finding a darn good solution.

Got some sideways scrolling going on in those examples John. Hope those don't spill over into the forums too. It's good to stay with a page width no wider than 780 px.

The page gets chopped off by about 100-120 px on the right side of the page.
