One of my machines has become infected with spyware. I have visited the tried and trusted HouseCall site to clean the machine but I keep getting the error message that Java is disabled.

It isn't - this must be how this little beasty protects itself.

Any tips on free spyware removal?

I got a case of the nasties recently. HouseCall said it found something, but the removal didn't work. AdAware found some stuff and said it quarantined it, but I still had the problem. Spybot and Norton found nothing.

I kept getting popups wanting to install this and that, searched on the program names and they were all spy/malware. The irony is tht these programs all claim to be anti-spyware/virus protection. rolleyeys

I just finished running a trial version of Prevx (prevx.com) which found several malicious dlls. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
