how to increse the google rating on my site (In: Google)

Hi,
I have a friend who works for Vedior.com based in Holland but a global company. He can find his competitors on Google earth business search, but not his own company.
How are the listings compiled? Any ideas?
My guess is the data is gleaned from directories like YELL.com but I would like the definitive answer.

Right,
Google use YELL.com in the UK and YellowPages.ca in the USA, but what about Europe?
Any Ideas?
