    OK, I must be simple.

I've been trying in vain now to ensure my .htaccess file has "write" permissions for a Wordpress blog I have running - the goal is clean URLs and I need the file to be writable, apparently - so says the documentation, etc.

I've tried IE for FTP-ing, now CuteFTP - neither show the .htaccess file in the directory.

When I look on the server, naturally, there it is. But I cannot set permissions on the server (or can I?).

    Frustrating.

I have the settings for viewing set to "show all hidden files/folders" and it's not doing it.

How in the heck do you set the folder permission when your FTP tool won't show you the damn folder?!

Gimme a gun - I'm shooting my PC!

I should ask this - since I'm running Apache 2.X, do I already have mod-rewrite installed maybe? I'm not seeing it in my "modules" on the server, but then again, I'm no sysadmin, either.

    >>When I look on the server,

    How? Which software?

There are many ways to do it. If you are using windows (at home/office), I can tell you the way to do it using windows FTP and batch file.

Using my Plesh interface to view everything on the server. I can also access things via FTP through IE, or via CuteFTP. using the Plesk interface allows me to edit docs on the server, rather than transfer them to my PC, edit, then transfer back.

Don't you have 'Change Permissions' link in file manager of your CP? It should be somewhere near 'Edit File' link. You need to use it.

Or if you are using Windows OS on your PC, you can do it using windows ftp software. Don't worry, it's easy. But I will make it more easy for you.

    Just follow my instructions:

    1. Create one txt file - upload.txt

    2. Put the following lines in that file:

    open yoursite.com
    username
    password
    prompt
    cd your-web-root-directory
    quote chmod 0777 .htaccess
    bye

    3. Create new file - upload.bat

    4. Put the following line in upload.bat file.

    ftp -s:upload.txt

    5. Double click upload.bat file to run it

    You are done.

If you know ftp commands then you will find this method more useful and easy way to upload your files.

PS: Don't forget to replace 'username' with your ftp username, 'password' with your ftp password.
