HELP!! HELP!!

I use search engines the way one would use a reference catalog in a library. At least I "thought" that was what they are for.Instead,I try to find direction to information sources on a given subject and instead I find myself drowning in a sea of advertising and false leads taking me so far off my intended course that a search entry of "Hospital ratings" has spit me out the other end onto a website selling foot cream, then to another selling medical supplies, then to another offering face lifts. It seems that search engines are really "search magazines" ....thousands of advertisements with 50 or so legitimate information sources tucked in...if you are lucky enough to find them an hour or several later. It doesn't matter how specific or varied the search request one is "forced" into a netherworld of advertising. If this is what is meant by technological progress we might as well go back to the old 12 volume encyclopedia. No matter how current the information the internet may have the potential to provide may be it is worthless if you can't get to it.Commercialism has become a giant blob sucking in everything in it's path and transforming all into personal profit. We have become the sole food source of commercial cannibals.

Question: Can anyone recommend search engines which are "not" search magazines where one can search and find a direct path to genuine information sources on a given topic? Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

try your searches in quotes

cause marketing vs "cause marketing"

the quotes will give you a more targeted result, but will not eliminate all the ads, but it is better

and i agree with you, i especially dislike the google keyword pages

Try using niche Directories and/or SEs that are focused on the topic of your choice. In theory, the niche sites will do a better job of editing out the non-topic specific results. This little nugget of wisdom assumes that you are able to find a good niche site that specializes in your topic of choice.
