Is it just me or does it seem that Apple is trying to pull a Microsoft. Sometimes I get the feeling that Apple iPod wants to control the market in mp3 and video media. Anyone else get that feeling?
I deliberately bought a non-Apple mp3 player just so that apple can't have too much control.

The key to their dominant position is iTunes. It's captured the market for impulse music purchases and is so freakin' smooth to use that most other things pale when compared.
What whizzes me off most is the proprietary format Apple has adopted. WTF is MP4 anyway.
I'll tell ya what it is - a way to ensure any iTunes music I PAID FOR can't be used on my MP3-capable phone - forcing me to travel with both the iPod AND phone to listen to music.
I love my iPods, but, like you Curt, bristle at the concept of being backed into a corner when faced with choices...
Next up is some software to convert iTunes songs to MP3 for my phone... ...or a firmware upgrade to allow the phone to read other formats, if that's available...
Oh, the hoops...

I've heard of mp4 files before. Did a google check to see what they were. Basically mp4's are to video files as mp3's are to audio files. MP3's compressed the audio file and mp4's compressed the video files. It appears that mp4's are not a proprietary format, but music in an mp4 format won't play on an mp3 player. However Apple may be using the mp4 format in order to control the market on their music files which does stink. Using a video file to play music is like recording music on a video tape.

Bit more info:
MP4 files with audio streams encrypted by FairPlay Digital Rights Management as sold through the iTunes Store use the .m4p extension. That could cause problems for other audio file players.
That's why I bought a player for mp3 playing to ensure I can play the file on anything that plays mp3's.

Perhaps Apple and Microsoft are actually the same company. After all, didn't ole Bill buy up some major shares in Apple some time back?
