It has been some time since I've posted in here and almost as long since I last visited. I recommended this site to someone on another forum and thought I should actually visit before making any recommendation. I was happy to see you still here.
I was saddened, but not really surprised to find that the ODP didn't turn up any hits from the last month. They are still around but I guess they are not considered a very good choice for getting listed any more.
I was also saddened to be reminded of Jim's passing. At the time I wasn't too involved as my father died in August of 2004 and my mother just died late last year but I was peripherally aware that he was no longer with us. Nice to see the memorial. Does anyone know how his wife and son are doing? Some days I find it hard enough coping with losing my parents. I can only imagine how traumatic it would be to lose my wife.
I'm happy to see SEF still up and running and hope that it remains an active monument to Jim Wilson.
Regards,
Spock, ex-ODP editor

Welcome back Spock!
ODP is still a solid resource IMO. Sure they've lost some luster, but I chalk it up to growing pains and human nature - after a while even the most generous of volunteers may begin to wonder if they can take a bit back for themselves.
By and large, I still count the ODP as a useful resource and never miss an opportunity to submit to them along my way (when appropriate).
Again, welcome back!

You are missed over at the ODP.
Your name still comes up from time to time when discussing the old days!

Does this mean I'm in the presence of another ODP editor G1?
Color me honored.
FWIW, good work guys.

SportsGuy: Thank you for the assurance that the ODP is still solid. When I left I had my doubts but I guess if an idea is good enough, it can survive almost anything.
g1smd: It is also gratifying that I have not been totally forgotten. I played with the idea of reapplying for editorship at one point but parts of the database were down at the time and I have now regained my senses. Once you have worked on a project such as the ODP and left, no matter the reason, it will never be the same if you go back.
SportsGuy: From his remarks, I can only assume that g1smd is indeed an ODP editor, though I do not recognize the name at this point. I, however, started out as a GnuWho (I think that's what it was called anyway) editor and transitioned over to what eventually became the ODP. There was a series of events that eventually lead to my loosing my editor access. Part my fault and part generated by some who I understand were also "resigned" later ... hence my 'ex-ODP editor' signature. If any two people are involved in an altercation, there are usually three or more sides to the story, so I will leave it at that. Hope I haven't disappointed you.

Hardly - I know some others who know some others, so to speak, and I've heard the stories about it all from folks who were behind the scenes.
In the end, I congratulate anyone who was or is an editor - it takes a serious commitment to be a volunteer anywhere, and folks need to remember that when they wail on editors for being slow.
ODP is still solid because it's massive - and because Google references them. Editors will come and go, the project is great than those parts now.
...and if we break it down strictly to numbers, ODP still gives some great links.

I am not quite sure when spock actually left, but it was at least some months, maybe almost a year, before I had joined.

I just realized no one has answered one of the more important questions I asked in my original post:
Does anyone know how his wife and son are doing?

I think only Bill Hartzer or John Cokos would know much about that.

Thanks for editing that post g1smd, this forum uses software that I'm not familiar with. It will probably take me a while to figure out how to make it do what I want, like quote parts of others posts, etc.
If you happen to hear anything, would you mind passing it on if it isn't too personal? Not that I could do anything to help but it would be nice to know Jim's family was doing well ... at least as well as possible after losing Jim.

Hopefully, Bill or John will see this.
The "quote" problem was minor: you had two opening tags -- instead of one opening and one closing tag.

Spock,
Jim's family is doing very well. Cathy, his wife, was an elementary school teacher. She's gone back to school and is persuing a complete career change.
Nick, Jim's son, has graduated from UCLA (I believe with a degree in History and Journalism) and is getting his career path started.
I don't talk to them nearly as much as I should, but the last time Cathy and I spoke, they were doing quite well. Nick is going to be a good one. I remember Jim just glowing when talking about Nick back when he was a 9 year old. My Goodness how time just flies.

Thanks for the reply jcokos,
They will have no idea who I am but they may find comfort in knowing that those who knew Jim are still concerned with his families welfare. I only knew him from in here and then not all that much but my wife and I have lost both our parents now and have some idea how they feel.
My only solace would be that you never forget but time makes the pain easier to bear and new things do become possible. I wish them the best.
