What program do I need to open a docx file? It contains an article I requested which was sent to me via email, but my PC tells me I can't open it with any of my program and when I told the "web" to find a program to open it with, I have to buy any the web suggested - such as
Microsoft Office Word 2000, 2002, and 2003 with the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for 2007 Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint file formats
Microsoft Office Word 2007
Word Viewer 2007

does anyone know how I can open this type of file for FREE? huh

Much Appreciated,
Beth smile

you can open it in older versions of word, you need to get the compatibility pack. This type of file is the new word 2007 XML doc format that is supposed to increase compatibility Ha Ha Ha

you can download the compatibility pack from MS here, its free

now if you don't have any version of office you can try using Open Office which is a free office suite that is as good or better than office, maybe its just better because its free
download it here

then you need the Open XML Translator

unfortunately, that may not work either as MS deliberately created the format to make Word2007 completely incompatible with OpenOffice.

but... i just found this

Open Office

You can use the Open XML Translator for Open Office to be able to read and edit docx files with Open Office. I have not tried this one.

Then there is an Online Solution

The docx converter lets you convert docx documents online. This is a pretty good solution if you don’t want to install the previously mentioned add-ons.
