OK, so I just saw an ad for a series of programs that left me wondering...is the TV programming we're being exposed to these days helping to lower society's intelligence?
Miami Bounty Girls was one of the shows advertised - obviously a take on Dog: The Bounty Hunter, but who the heck would be interested? I mean, the original show is, at best, pointless, which makes the copy-cat version....what? Brainless?
Then I think of the all the "reality" programs out there. I personally don't watch any of them, but so many people do. Are they THAT interesting?
...or are we all just getting exposed to crap programming designed to pander to the lowest common denominator?
Look at advertising as an example - in North America, everything is limited to fit within certain rules and boundaries. In Europe, things are much more relaxed, and the advertising is actually a form of entertainment - hence ads for products in Europe tend to seem *very* racy to us North Americans.
Anyway, just thought this might make for an interesting discussion...

Not exactly high brow is it?
As for advertising, we're not allowed to show adverts for cheese when kids are watching telly in case they see it and suddenly get fat.

Reality TV is cheap to make. As long as people don't demand higher quality entertainment, they'll keep producing crap. Paris Hilton's simple life crapola and similar stuff is just down right mind numbing and boring. The only reality TV I watch is in the form of informative documentaries on the Discovery channels.

We just finished watching a three part documentary on the history of Coca Cola - informative, entertaining and enlightning.
...other than that, we watch the same shows over and over, most on the Food Network...LOL (Yes, I am, in fact, a loser...)

Food network is coooooool:D i think it really depends what we watch, if someone watches the primetime telivion and all those reality TV garbage then yes,or we can just surf the channels and find something more worth watching, its up to the persons taste.

Can't tell you the number of times my couch has been soaked in drool just staring at mouth sizzling dishes on the food network.
