I'm getting sideways scrolling. The page is too wide.

I have my browser set to 1024 pix wide and this page still does sideways scrolling. sad

I will say that the design is fresh though--just needs some narrowing perhaps down to 950 px wide or less.

Great job. Though I get this feeling that it's still a work in progress. The left and top margins look great but the main body of the thread still looks the same (at the time of this writing) in terms of color/design. Any plans to sync the color scheme to match the left/top margins? Just a thought wink

Ok guys, if we're going to critique, let be professional (as its been so far). If seen these things get nasty.

I also get the scroll, I'm set for 1024

I would also like to see the log inat top so I don't have to scroll to login and so I can see that I am logged in.
It took me a few minutes to find it, it should be where first time visitors can see it in a second

as for the site design, as stated in the other post, its old school and dated.

I had no problem with the old design as it functioned well enough for the most part. Freshening a site is fine too. Once the page width issue is fixed, this updated design will be swell-o-matic.

    Yes.

Jcokos must have gone to a great deal of trouble to work on the improvements and changes to this forum. Good Job.

BTW, swell-o-matic ? Do you always think technical even to describe a design, Curt ?

One of the reasons for the change was to sort out branding issues on this and other parts of the network:

    VirtualPromote - SearchEngineForums - FreeSiteTemplates - JimWorld - etc.

It all came about after a suggestion that the regular SEF logo needed a "ten years online" addition...

bigsmile teehee... well it was actually a term I picked that is a throw-back to the 1950's... something you might hear on a TV show such as "Leave it to Beaver". Back then, a word like that would have sounded techie I suppose wink

BTW, I don't know if the term actually exists somewhere or not... it just came to me smile

ADDED: OK, guess it has been used before (just did google search). It was probably used on some TV show I watched in the past.

Even without going to the origin of the phrase, I knew - coming from you Curt - It must be technical. :)

    Need another proof ?
Look at the way you use the quote. ;)

Am I the only person who doesn't like the redesign?

Sorry to be negative, but it looks very dated to me.

The whole left hand column idea - can't see the point of it being there - especially when it results in having to scroll sideways to any useful content.

I fixed the scroll bars --- you do need to be at 1024 though, in order to fit it all in.

To answer a few questions raised:
[li] Yes, I'm going to slightly change the colors in the posts screens to match the other colors.
[li] Sorry that the left hand column feels very 90's to some of you, but we need to have advertising to keep the lights on, and simply stuffing them at the top and bottom of the pages (or as some other fourms do ... between the posts even) makes the actual forums harder to read and use.

Keeping the right side somewhat skinny (695 wide) makes for easier reading and retention, and the ad stuff on the left is both easily seen and easily ignored, in theory making everyone happy.

No, it's not ultra modern, but it doesn't make use of a million tables and divs, so it loads pretty quick and it's not so sharp a color contrast as to make it difficult to read for more than a few minutes. That was the goal --- soft colors, skinnier width threads, and ads that don't suck up the whole first half of the page, or employ pop-ups to get your attention.

    Perfect? No.
    A work in progress? Always.
    Mission Accomplished? Mostly wink

You're never going to please everybody all of the time.

My gripe is based on the fact the this forum and other "cutting edge" fora need to look more "web 2.0" in order to present themselves as being cutting edge.

For me, modern design is a must in order to not just stand out, but to compete.

This site design for me is a backward step. Back to the days of semi transparent buttons.

I hope you take this as constructive criticism and not an attack.

I though long and hard before I criticised because I don't want to be chastised and I have always had ambitions of becoming an insider or a mod.

Anyway, I opted to put my views forward hoping they may be of some use to you.

Hmmm - I wonder of registered users could pay a small monthly subscription to see a site without the advertising?

    I would.
