I would like to hear the good, the bad and the ugly about Joomla please.

Is it just me, or is this harder to learn then most things? I have tackled, CSS, MSQL and a few other "hard" ones, but this joomla seems to be getting the best of me rolleyeys

Don't ask what part is hard - all of it is ! From install and forward.

So I am trying to decided if this CMS is worth me beating my head against a rock to learn eek

    Hence opinions on it wanted.

It needs a ton of work just to get rid of Duplicate Content issues. Life is too short.

The root home page has at least 16 different URLs that will work for it, just for starters.

you know where i stand, it works great and can be optimized and with the right tools, the duplication issue is easily taken care of.

    my sites do very well

every page has its own titles and metas

artio or sh404 takes care of modrewrite for dynamic urls

beth, go for it, learn the cms first, than learn how to optimize it second.

If you don't need to update / add new content to the site, go with HTML (or use php if you want to do some db stuff) pages with SSI includes and external CSS & JS files for easy updates.

Else try wordpress. It's much easy to learn and customize.

Are all these suggestions considered a part of the CMS "circle" ?

If it's referred to my post then -

CMS stands for Content Management System.

It means a system to manage content, called CMS.

So CMS can be made with -

    - HTML + SSI + Javascript
    - PHP + Database (MYSQL type database or just plain text file)
    - some other combinations are also possible. examples : ASP / Perl / C / MSSQL / Cold fusion.

Joomla and wordpress are an examples of CMS based on PHP + database.

You can make your own simple CMS using HTML + SSI, if you don't need database.

I have one website where I don't need database, but I need to make ON/OFF few products per month. So I used PHP to make my own simple CMS, where I have status.php file. I just make ON/OFF products using this php file and it reflects on all related pages.

Joomla is a very good option to use open source design and customize a shopping cart for your website. There is a good link for Joomla technology in my profile, so you can check this. Hopefully you will find something new and innovative.

Actually Beth, you have a wide choice of CMS available. Before you decide, you need to consider a few things:

    1. How big is going to be your site ?
    2. How many people are going to be involved in creating/ updating the content ?
    3. Do you plan to have many content creators working from afar who will have to collaborate on each 'project' ?
    4. What will be the technical skills of those assigned the roles of editors and writers ?
    5. What extra features do you want in your CMS ? - eg; the ability to cache pages for faster delivery of content, add on modules for SEO etc

There are more questions to ask, but the above indicate enough for starters.
