Yesterday I had a client angry that I had put a "website designed by companyx" link on their website.I was quite taken aback, what are your thoughts on this?

If you client don't want to put your link on his website then it's ok. Afterall he is paying you $$$.

Most new clients should have checked out previous client site and would have noticed your site credits? Apart from that it is probably something to discuss pre sign up.Personally if someone had that attitude, I wouldn't want my site to be associated

well i removed it and said no more i can't see the big deal- it's in size-2 font, and hidden at the bottom of the page in website info.my friend said i should offer a discount for people letting me put it on- £15 a time?! I think not! Sony don't gie you a discount for putting their logo on your tv for example, and rightly so!

But they won't take any objection if you want to scratch it.

Who does the copyright for the site belong to ? you or the client. By law copyright is to the author unless otherwise stated in writing and authors of things should be given credit for their work.Just thought I would make you feel better

excell, in the US the copyright for the site belongs to the company if they paid for it. Since we are talking TV's, look at your Sony operations manual. Does the copyright belong to the people who actually wrote it, printed it, or organized it? Nope, it belongs to the company who paid for it all to happen. In my experiance almost all companies do not want a link to a web designer on there, it isn't even a question.

I stopped automatically adding links to sites I designed long ago. For the most part the 'link pop' is pretty much nil and I personally don't like those 'designed by' links - esp when their on several pages What's even worse are the paragraphs of comments some add to sites source

If a client has an about us page in their site, I ask them if we can add a paragraph of text about who the web design company was and the strategic relationship. This isn't as obtrusive as the "powered by" or "designed by" links/graphics you see on other sites, and it gives credit where credit is due. I have had very few sites who objected to this method.

"in the US the copyright for the site belongs to the company if they paid for it" Can you show me a link please to a site where it pertains to web design and the internet. Here is mine, let's compare notes on that please.

'Designed by' links are like web counters, email animations, etc. Crap.It makes the client look stupid and cheap, and makes the web designer look desperate and without an eye for design or branding. As Janet stated earlier, it isn't even a question.

Hmm.. I tend to understand your arguement and yet disagree a bit... as with all links, if it adds to the keyphrase strength it is good. That is if we are talking optimisation that is.

I was putting them on for optimisation.....And you don't have to make it that "visible"- not neccessarily a 'crap' feature like a web counter etc as mentioned previous. if its in small text, at the bottom of the page where FRANKLY no-one looks, who cares.

Excell, in my case im running a local directory- my website links to my clients- so surely when they link to me, they boost my ranking, and when i link to them im linking wihin an increased ranking....phew and as for the principal tbh i'm gonna keep doing it anyway. i've been freelancing for 5 months now, and 1 complaint out of 30 won't make me change my mind. its not like im putting a huge banner. simply, "web design by companyx"
if your car was pink, and 30 people never said anything....then one person came along and called you a pansy you wouldn't take much notice of them now would you?

well sheesh if you run a local directory and you you are a local business and you are local and all then you change your "website designed by yahdahyahda" to "*keyword* website by yahdahyahda local and country"Then it adds value to you and to THEM. as you are adding local keywords.. do you see?
