I can hardly believe it, but I got the #1 position on MSN for my keywords "make money online with articles". I built articleupdates.com from scratch in late October. I applied all the on and off page optimization techniques I know. So for anyone who was wondering if all these techniques work, I can tell you they do first hand!.
I simply followed all the instructions from a free ebook I downloaded. I used my keyword phrase in the following:
URL Name (partially)
Page Title
H1 Text
H2 Text
Bold Text in Body
Same Site Internal Links using anchor text
Image Alt Text
Image filename
HTML Comment Tags
Using anchor text with link partners (limited to sites I thought were high quality)
Linking to high quality sites even though they don't link back.
To see my site, just type in the keyword phrase into msn search and I am #1. (for now...)
This was my first serious attempt at seo. It's very rewarding to see the results! Hopefully it will payoff in traffic and $$$$!

Hi, you're right. On Jan 3 I didn't even rank at all. I checked it again today and yesterday, I'm #1 again.
I believe I'm in google. If you type in mydomain.com in the search box, I should come up.
But for all intents, I'm not really indexed by them. But showing up in google at all means I'm not banned.
I've had posts from other forums telling me that's typical of msn. Up one day, then down, then back again. Ideally you'll be higher more often than not. Keeping up the on page optimization and linking is key.
Thanks for checking. I appreciate your input!

Hate to burst your bubble there Rob, but after some quick research, your "win" may not be that dramatic.
There were exactly ZERO searches performed on that phrase in the last year or so - I'll qualify this in a minute.
So, it's good you ranked well after your efforts, but let's keep some things in mind here:
1 - it's much easier to rank well in MSN right now, than in Google
2 - MSN delivers a fraction of the traffic which G can deliver to a well ranked site
3 - your rnaking on a VERY long search phrase - that number one spot shold be expected on such a long phrase - which users would not typically use when searching.
In summary - you ranked well in MSN - but has it actually been developing traffic for you - the phrase you rnaked well for - my guess is...not so much.
I'm not picking on you here, please understand.
But if new folks come in here and read "how simple this is" (paraphrasing) they WILL be lead down the wrong road.
Getting a site ranked for a no-traffic phrase, or a long search phrase is much easier than accomplishing the same thing, in Google, too, for a busy, well trafficed one or two-word search phrase.
I'd suggest your next move might be to start getting links in directories (if you haven't already) and keep working on this site to get the same results in Google.
Let us know how it works for you.
*** Used the Keyword Discovery database to query results for that actual phrase - it returned a zero.***

Hi, Sports Guy.
You're absolutely right. It's not a popular phrase, and I get very little traffic.
From Jan 1 - Jan 22:
MSN - 13 unique
Google - 13 unique
Yahoo - 2 unique
others - 3 unique
Total income from adsense $12.14
Total incomce from affiliate links $0.00
I didn't mean to imply that seo is simple. However, I hope I demonstrated that on-page optimization can still get results.
As you indicated, off-page optimization such as anchor text in backlinks from directories still carry the most weight when it comes to ranking. Especially in google.
Trying to rank high for an extremely competitive keyword or phrase is difficult. Trying to rank high for an extremely unpopular keyword or phrase is possible, but probably won't pay the bills.
Finding something in between would be ideal! Not impossible and not useless.
If this thread keeps up any interest, I'll continue to post significant updates.
SportsGuy, thank you so much for the comments. It was a little bit of a buzz-kill, but reality often is.

Wasn't trying for a buzz-kill Rob - sorry for that.
Since it appears this is "the beginning" of this cycle for you & this site, please keep us posted as to how things grow.
I'm sure there are lots of users who come here and would like to see the flow of how this works out in the real world - at least they'll see they're as normal as everyone else online...LOL
