This may have been thought of before although I just discovered it, but why not use ebay as on of your main sources of traffic. We all know the amount of traffic they get right, so put that free traffic to good use. Here's how.
I first changed my ebay ID to my website URL. This is allowed by ebay as long as you use some wildcard in front, and back doesn't hurt, of it. For example, if you were to use *www.yourdomain.com* as your ebay ID, it's perfectly legal in ebay's eyes and you now have your domain in front of thousands of people anytime you buy and sell on ebay.
Human curiosity will be to cut and paste your URL to see what your site is all about. But it gets better. If you actually auction off something that has to do with your site, the traffic goes through the roof. I sell health related products and whenever I have an auction for one of my products and mention "this goes for as much as X on my site", the traffic soars.
I can even do this with affiliate programs. I can auction off products I don't even have as long as it's worded carefully and when someone wins the auction you just give them your affiliate link as the place to go to "checkout."
Many more possibilities. And if you're wondering if this works, ebay is #2 in my traffic logs as referrer.
Enjoy.

i've been seeing more and more sellers use their web site as their user id. It sounds like a good idea to me. My one question however...if I change my user id to my web site url, will I lose all of the feedback under my current user id or does that transfer over? I can't find anything on ebay regarding this policy.

A friend of mine tried that about 6 months ago and lost all the feedback with that ID -- like starting over again. I don't know whether they fixed that or not... FWIW

This is from eBay: I hope it's ok to list the link:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/index_popup.html?account=changing-user-id.html
Changing Your User ID
Your User ID is the unique nickname you choose for signing in when you first register at eBay. If you decide to change your User ID at any time:
The change will appear immediately, even in listings you're participating in.
eBay will automatically attach your feedback profile and other important account information to your new User ID.
The shades icon will also appear next to your User ID for 30 days.
Your old User ID can't be used by anyone else at eBay for 30 days.
Note:
You can only change your User ID once in a 30-day period. This is to prevent confusion

eBay also states this:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/index_popup.html?reg=user_id.html
Remember that User IDs:
May contain letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), and/or many symbols
Must be at least two characters long
Can't contain spaces
Can't be obscene, profane, or hateful
Can't be an email address or Web site
Can't be the same as another sellers' eBay Store name
Things you can't include:
The @, &, ‘, <, or > symbol
URLs (for example xyz.com)
Consecutive underscores "__"
An underscore "_", dash "-", or period "." at the beginning of a User ID
Spaces or tabs
The word "eBay"—only eBay employees may use "eBay" in their User IDs
The letter "e" followed by numbers
So it looks like putting your website address for your name is spam to eBay.

Hi,
I've followed this idea and changed my ebay user id to match my site name.
Then I went to post an item and thought that it may not be the easiest way to go - I still have to pay the posting fee and fill all the details.
Instead, I'm gonna place some bids in the auctions - playing to lose, but getting my new username (>domain) appear in the 'bid listing'.
It's just an extra twist on your idea - get some branding with no money and minimal effort

has anyone actually seen any increase in traffic that you can prove came from this scheme?

when I first started my web store about a little over a month ago, all I did for traffic was post a few auctions on ebay. Now, I don't have my website as my username but I did get anywhere from 30-50 hits just by putting a link to my site in my auction description.
I also had about four sales through email negotiations with people who wanted either similar products or additional accessories to the products on auction. So in all, I had seven sales my first week ($1100 revenue), three from auctions and the four through email. Not a bad first week on the Internet, especially considering I was only using one source for traffic.
Since however, my sales through ebay have slacked off, I sometimes even have trouble getting the auctions to sell. I think it depends a lot on what kind of product you're selling. I sell products that aren't necessarily a hot ebay item, so seven sales in one week is pretty good. On the other hand, if you sell computer parts (one of the hottest categories on ebay), then I would imagine you would see a much larger increase in traffic and sales by promoting your web address in your description and user name.
The thing about the ebay policy is that they ebay site is ran by only about 25 people because the system is so automated. Typically, the only time a violation is investigated is when it is reported, so as long as the system accepts your username, then you probably won't have much of any trouble using your web address. However, the other thing you would need to consider is the ethical implications of going against something you know to be against policy. I wouldn't call it a major unethical act by any means, just a little detail, but it's there nonetheless.
