G'Day to all the members who read this.
I would like to share my experience with offering a free product contest for one lucky person who registers at my Forum.
This works very effectivley as long as you are prepared to do some work yourself. I offer a free product contest so what I do then is find all the contest forums, free stuff forums etc and drop a message into the relevant Topics. Be sure to be polite and read the posting guidelines associated with each site(some sites require expirey dates in the subject etc.)
I submitted to about 20 high volume forums and have instant results, 100's of daily visitors many registered users.
Of course you can change your own competition rules eg best post, best response but I would only suggest that once your forum becomes active. Get members registered first!
I also run a Pay Per Click with a major search engine and it performs poorly when compared to the above method.
To see my simple contest layout visit [URL removed -- should be in profile only.]

Profit of Peace,
Yes, contests and forum promotions can be very effective ways of getting traffic. As you noted, you have to promote your promotion -- it's not going to sell itself. Forums, appropriate newsgroups, all the relevant sweepstakes/contest sites, as well as a press release, will help stimulate your promotion. PPC also helps as long as your keywords attract your target audience.

the best way to get visitors quickly is to put up a sale on ebay if you are trying to sell somthing that has a monthly income put a sale out on ebay that says what there going to get and have them bid on getting like the first 5 months free and then u do that once a week and u will keep getting more subscribers. its worked wonders for my ppc search engine all i did was i put a sale out on ebay that said 1000 targeted visitors thought this is exactly worth 10$ on my website people paid more than 20$ so check it out

The most well-known and effective sites are:
http://www.sweepstakesonline.com
http://www.online-sweepstakes.com
http://www.sweepsadvantage.com
http://www.onlinesweeps.com
http://www.redhotsweeps.com
These are the sites that draw the most traffic. Once you post a sweepstakes or contest on these sites, others will pick them up.
