I work for a non-profit organization, which are (finally) are coming around to the idea of building an email list. Unfortunately, they are not too keen on the idea of permission marketing.
We are doing a fundraising campaign where people can purchase a particular gift for a particular child, and they will receive an e-Christmas card with a picture of their selected child receiving their gift at our Christmas party in their email. In order to receive they have to give us their email.
Here’s the issue: I want to put a “check here join our mailing list” box on the form and get permission to email people after the Christmas campaign is over. Others don’t want to put it there because
1)Then people won’t check the box and they ‘loose’ that email address
2)When they put their email down on a form, they fully expect to get lots of emails as result, so why should our organization be any different.
Can anyone give me solid reasons why it’s bad for non-profits to abuse their email list, so I can convince them that they are doing this the wrong way. Examples would be good too.

I would of thought this was a no brainer really.....
If I trust someone with my email for a purpose and they abuse that
purpose, am I going to deal with them in the future? If someone
cannot be trusted to use my email in the stated manner, they certainly
cannot be trusted to accept charitable donations.
In all honesty, don't implement an email list if it is not permission
based, particularly a charity that needs to project itself as ethical
above all else.... I agree with you 1000%.

Villageidiot, that was a great way at looking at it.
Here is their reasoning. Internet savvy people like you/me know that if I give out my email for a particular purpose that it should only be used for that purpose...anything else is spam. Joe-smoe, on the other hand assumes that once he gives out his email address, then he fully expects to get constant email from that organization.
Hummm, I wonder if we could apply the same 'logic' to people you give us their credit card information.
