I was wondering if it is ethical and as importantly legal to charge an entry fee to get into a sweepstakes drawing. If not ,should it be called something else...like a contest?

Generally not. I think there are some laws out there that require that you allow people to enter for free. I think, as I recall (I may be wrong, though) that it has to be called a raffle rather than a sweepstakes.

Most companies opt to hire an independent organization to run their sweepstakes.

I’m no lawyer, but I’m assuming that if you receive cash for an entry it would become a raffle.

Hope that helps...

Reputable sweepstakes do not charge an entry fee. Consumer Reports has commented in past articles that if you are required to send in a fee for sweepstakes, run the other way--it looks like a scam.
