Hey,
Anyone have any ideas as to how to successfully market a travel site? I've used google adwords and overture and i'm spending substantially more money on advertising then what i'm getting back in revenue. Would appreciate any advice on how to get the business to really start getting customers and making a profit. Thanks.
Kush

Hi Kush,
I have many good ideas on how to market a travel site. First off before you start spending money on any type of advertising make sure that your website has the ability to make you your money back.
This is how:
Have you researched your competition for quality of service, experience, price and expertise in the industry? Ask you self if you think people would buy from you over your competition and why would they buy from you over your competition. If you don’t know then do some research and find out if you ready to start advertising.
With pay per click advertising you if you are spending more money then you are getting back stop spending money immediately and make some changes. Are you tracking your web stats to see what people are doing on your site? Are you using ROI software to see how your ppc campaigns are doing in comparison to each other?
The good news is that it is very difficult to and time consuming (but very possible) to get you site making you money. The reason it’s good news is because one you get it, you’ve got a profit making site and it’s just as hard for you competition.
If you want more info let me know.

Travel is highly competitive which drives keyword ad costs up. You need a very effective site and creative keyword research and ads in order to generate traffic at a cost that allows for a profit.
In order to make money with any site, first have a clear idea HOW you will make money. Then make sure it is obvious to people landing on your site.
It is not clear on many sites what it is they're offering. Imagine that you know nothing about your business and you click on one of your ads. When you arrive at that page and look around do you know why you're there?
Even better, have other people go to your site. Observe them quietly and see where they click. Your site should have an obvious path to what you want them to do.
The best example I can offer to illustrate that even attractive professionally designed sites need to make what you want painfully OBVIOUS is for an insurance company for which I created keyword ads.
If someone searches on "insurance quote" and clicks on an ad for "insurance quotes" and lands on a page with a button to obtain a quote, why did only about 3% ASK for one?
To improve that conversion percentage, I recommended putting the "get a free quote" information right in the middle of the page using the simplest words possible.
When they click on that they get a page that explains EXACTLY what WILL and WILL NOT happen when they request a quote. People will not provide personal information unless they feel safe doing it and they know "what's in it for them".
Remember that in everything you do that must be your focus: "What is in it FOR THEM" - NOT FOR YOU. Many businesses focus too much on what they want and fail to give their potential clients what THEY want.

Good Info flyingrose,
I really like this one:
