Whether I'm looking through web directories, search engine results for various keywords, or competitors' backlinks, it seems like I always have to sift through hundreds of websites before I find one that's halfway decent for linking purposes. For me, "halfway decent" means the site has a Links page with at least PageRank of 3 and doesn't have so many other links on it.

If I'm lucky, I'll find 3 or 4 sites that meet the criteria after looking for a couple hours. Also if I'm lucky, these sites have working email accounts posted too.

Are there any shortcuts to getting some good leads?

Nope. smile

Some people, however, would argue that your criteria for a half-way decent site should perhaps be reevaluated. A link should be a long-term investment, but your criteria is based solely on short-term values. Page Rank and the number of outbound links, for example, can change dramatically over time, and what you find on a site today is no real indication of what you will find a few months or years down the road.

A better criteria, I think, is to look at the potential of the site. Find a well designed site with a web master who knows which end is up, and you can ignore everything else. If it's a good site, the PR will rise quickly. If it's a good web master, you know they won't throw a thousand links on a single page. Think long term, next month or next year, and ignore today's questionable benefits.

Uh, of course, that just makes it MORE difficult to find half-way decent sites. smile

Don't under estimate the power of a link. I try for good links but 7 years ago I posted a response on a forum (it would be considered spam today) It still sends me lots of traffic with an above average conversion rate.

Another site I work on is very popular. It also has a famous owner. People link to the site all the time. Checking my logs I am surprised how people get to the site. I am becoming a believer in there is no such thing as a bad link some are just better than others. Many times you can't tell in the beginning if it will be successful.

There is definitely 'wiggle' room on the pages you link to. I got a request today that on first glance I thought was insane. Mainly because it seemed obvious the request came from someone who hadn't really looked at our site. The site is an animal specific gifts site. Yes our name has that animal's name in it but we don't have anything concerning them on the site. We sell magazines subscriptions! But when I looked at her links and what she wrote as a description for our site I have to admit she has potential. She's got a descent page rank, clear, concise meta-tags, ranks well on her keywords, etc. So I'm going to go for it. Sometimes you just have to see the forest through the trees.
