I am wanting to set up a site where price comparisions from various merchants can be made.
Anyone give me a pointer as to if there is any off-the-shelf software that helps or is it all ground-up coding and establishing databases that needs to be done.

This area seems to be saturated from an affiliate standpoint.
Also, you may need direct hooks into the various companies product/pricing pages that a normal affiliate relationship won't give you. The vendor may have to create a custom interface for you to extract pricing data.
Otherwise updating this on a daily basis is a huge pain. I suppose you could build a spider of some kind but that has it's own challenges.

There are a few price comparison scripts listed here at the bottom of this page although I haven't tried any of them.
Most really advanced sites use custom programming, usually pulling various xml feeds from the major merchants and the combining them.
There's also a price comparison calculator script here that you could include on your site.
