Just thought this would be a good topic and am curious about how everyone got into the biz.
What were you doing before you got started doing affiliate marketing? Did you have a J.O.B. and quit to do this full-time? Do you still have a J.O.B? Do you do AM from home or have an office?
So, how about you???

Well here's how I got started...
I had my own SEO company, then became VP of Marketing for a company,
took another position as eCommerce manager for an online retailer. I
started their affiliate program on CJ, then decided I wanted to manage
lots of affiliate programs and help lots of affiliates instead of being
stuck in a company doing the same program every day.
Quit my job, started my own Affiliate Management Consulting Company and
here I am consulting for & helping to oversee 15 affiliate programs and
supporting over 10,000 affiliates. Now I'm working out of my home 12
hours a day, 7 days a week and making six figures in my PJ's! (I never
bother to get dressed unless I need to leave the house.) ;-) NO boss, NO
commute, NO office politics - just helping lots of people make money
with affiliate marketing and loving every minute of it!
How about the rest of you???

I still have one of those J.O.B.S., I work in the Hotel industry. I usually prefer working the night shift (when it is peaceful and I am undisturbed) so I can do some internet work on my laptop. I handle all of the hotel's internet contracts (Hotels.com, Lodging.com etc).
Naturally, I got involved on the affiliate side of the hotel companies and earn some money on the side. Its not enough to give up the "night job" yet, but I am making progress.

Gamiziuk-Sounds like your J.O.B led you right into affiliate marketing, which is awesome! Keep up the good work, and soon you'll be able to quit that J.O.B and work all day in your PJ's! =) Thanks for your story.

Catalyst--
How do you manage to build, promote and maintain all those affiliate sites? Is CJ the only affiliates you use?

Hi ebgreen.
I'm not an affiliate, I own an Affiliate Management Consulting Company. So I help connect good affiliates with the programs I represent. Currently we have around 15 affiliate programs that we either manage or consult for. I have a pretty unique role. I'm sort of a combination of match-maker, head hunter, recruiter, PR, outside sales manager and marketing manager all roled into one - but all targeted to online affiliates instead of offline sales and promotion.
As far as the CJ question - we manage and promote merchants regardless of the platform they are on. Currently we have lots of CJ programs, 1 Linkshare and lots of Indies that use DirectTrack. We have lots of new clients coming on board too so that mix could change somewhat.
Hope this helps and best of luck!

Catalyst,
You seem to have a lot of knowledge of Affiliate Marketing. I own a small business, selling furniture. I don't have enough marketing budget to invest in networks such as CJ or Linkshare. However, I have been reccommended by a few people to partner with ShareAsale. Do you have any idea about ShareAsale? I am new to Affiliate Marketing arena, so I would need your advice on how to get started? Please help.
Thanks.

Hi rdan,
Yes shareasale gets my strong recommendation if you are looking for a smaller and VERY affordable network. Lots of the super affiliates actually prefer it.
I just got a contract with a great furniture merchant that pays the highest commission I have seen, so could not help you directly, but give me a call for a free consult and I can refer you to someone that can help you get started. Number is on my site.
Hope this helps and best of luck!

Hey Catalyst,
I live by the traffic on my websites as well. My websites do very well.
Isn't the point of affiliates, etc to NOT work 12 hours per day 7 days per week? Aren't we supposed to get some freedom at some point?
Anyway... I am interested to hear about your affiliate experience.

rdan,
If you have not made a decision yet, the other recommendation I have is My Affiliate Program from Kowabunga: http://info.myap.com. One of the BIG benefits to MYAP is that once you have their software you can be added to their new network - www.kolimbo.com and their directory www.affiliatecash.com at no additional charge.
So you have the benefits of owning your affiliates and the relationship, like you don't have with networks - but you still get the recruiting benefits of being in a network and directory. Kind of the best of both worlds.
Hi quality-ins,
You Said:
"Isn't the point of affiliates, etc to NOT work 12 hours per day 7 days per week? Aren't we supposed to get some freedom at some point?"
Well yes that's the goal many people work toward. It depends on what you want in life. Since I don't really do much affilate marketing myself, but help affiliates and merchants succeed - I get great personal rewards out of my consulting business. It's not a J.O.B. to me, it's my passion. I don't need to work this hard, I do it because I love it - so it's not really work.
However for many affiliates, yes the goal is building up sites and income to be able to have some freedom.
Hope this helps and best of luck!

Ill keep my story short... I built a site for a local guy and it didnt get any search engine trafic for about 2 months so he decided he didnt want it anymore and I never got paid - It was on a free host as a test bed so I just kept it for myself and added some links to a merchant and what do you know the thing made money, so I expanded from there.
Yes I had a job at the time - now this is my job.
