I am looking for some general info on the exposure and demographics of the larger online forums. I.e. How many people visit the forums, read the post, post, what age, gender, ethnic...ect I would be happy to even get some general info on this, I.E. This many Americans use forums, this many teenagers.. Can anyone point me in the right direction here?

I'm not aware of any concrete info in this area, though I'd be interested in it as well.

One of the attractions of forums is their anonymity. Most only require a user nickname and an email address to register. In the U.S. many disallow members under the age of 13 because of the hoop-jumping required by COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) regulations. But all one generally has to do is state they are at least 13, no one actually checks. Age, gender, ethnicity... no one asks that stuff.

Many, if not most, of the more successful forums evolved from a successful home page devoted to a specific topic that draws in a "community" of members with a common interest.

big-boards.com has some info on larger forums. But any such info can be deceiving. I admin a forum that sprang from a hardware news/reviews site. Over the course of five years we've had over 100K members, but we periodically prune inactive members and older posts to keep the database a reasonable size.
