I have noticed that some websites have images of the owners. What is the general feeling around this? Does putting up a photo of the owner of an online business on the website have a positive, negative or neutral effect with potential customers?

Part of it depends on where and why you are posting it. I wouldn't go splashing a giant 500x500 photo of the CEO on the front page of GM's web site, but I would suggest that a smaller or specialty business that is run by a well-known specialist might want to. (well, not a 500x500, but you get the idea.)

Otherwise, I'd suggest having an "about the company" style section that might include brief bios of key executives/owners. You could include a small, tasteful picture there.

Thanks for the reply. To narrow down the type of website, I'm referring to a small online art gallery type of business. There's an About Us page already there. In this case, would it be advisable to add in a photo of the owner?

I think a photo of the artist(s) will help - not necessarily the person who owns the site if that person is not an artist.

IMHO

Yep...I agree with philh...

If you are featuring the work of an artist, especially one that is known, put their picture.

Now, if the gallery is owned by someone well known in the industry, then sure, add a picture of them to the about us page.

What you really need to ask yourself is this... will the people visiting the site be benefited by having a picture of "so and so" on here. If the answer is yes, then put it. If the answer is no and the only reason you are posting it is to make the owner happy, well, then you probably don't need it. wink

I understand the positive about putting up photos of the artists. Would an image of the owner make the website more personable, especially to customers who have never shopped online before?

I think it would depend on what the owners look like! If they're ugly then they might turn off some potential customers. (just kidding!)

Seriously though, I think photos "personalize" a business in an online world that doesn't have much personalization. I tend to like sites that have an About Us page that shows the owners' photos next to their individual bio.

Ok.. I'm asking questions again on another topic... rolleyeys

On the About Page, I've always been curious on how you would judge what to write as far as content. For example, how do you figure out what to write on your about page in comparison to your index page or your other pages for that matter?? Case example. When I've gone to other web sites, I've seen an About Page that has had pretty much the same bit of information that the index page does and it confuses me. Not that it doesn't make sense, it does. What I don't understand is, I thought that when you do the About Page, you're supposed to be talking about the growth of the company itself and where you plan on seeing it develop in the future.

That make sense?

If you want, you can see my About Us page at [link] and compare it to my index page. I'm just a small business so I wouldn't be talking about anything like growth of the company or anything too corporate.

WOW Cleung! How cool!!! smile I love the web site and the artwork is beautiful!! smile

Thanks for sharing the link with me and I appreciate you showing me the example. That makes better sense and it gives me more of an idea of where I was getting things a little bit confused.

I'll be back to visit the site more when I have time to browse!

Thanks again for the help!
