I was thinking of making a new forum.
The Main problem I find in making a forum only site, is that it will be
very hard to attract visitors when you have no posts and no activity.

And even harder to get people to start posting, and get the forum to be active.

Anyone might have some tips, or just a general idea on how to bring a forum up
and running? as in - traffic and activity(posts).

I was told that you have to get the ball rolling yourself. Making post that people that want to respond and to get a few people to help you out in posting and being moderators.

sorry I'm not much of a help but I am starting my own forum all about NYC and I am stuck in a few things myself. sad

The best way to get chatter moving is to have a site focused on a particular topic of content, then open the forum as a place to discuss the topic.

If you reply on others to, in essence, create the content for you by posting, you're essentially waiting for others to do free work for you - how likely is that to take off quickly?

Starting a forum on a controversial topic is fine, but it's a pretty narrow focus. Chances are also good that someone else already thought of, and has created, a forum like the one you're considering.

If forums already exist, look through them for patterns:

~ Are new comers hassled when they post simple questions?
~ Are there "inside" conversations going on relating to old members or past posts?
~ Is the current forum broken out into enough detail for the topic?

You might be able to find a niche somewhere with those ideas to fill - once YOU get the ball rolling, folks will come along - it always takes a LEADER to start, though.

As for mods - be very careful - you don't want volunteers "taking over" the feel and atmosphere of YOUR idea. Many times you have never, nor will you ever, meet these folks face to face. Your mods, and their egos/attitudes/perceptions/intentions/moods, can and will, set the tone of your forum and ultimately, how they treat posters can impact your success or failure. We're all human, choose yours carefully.

Finally - YOU must keep an open mind. YOUR opinion on a post is not what counts - forums are generally seen as "free speach" areas, so YOU must be willing to let things slide which you personally may not agree with. Obviously, hate-focused things and topics out-of-order should not be tolerated (unless they themselves are the focus of the forum).

Incidentally, I use the term "forum" to mean posting forums, chat forums and, in general, any online community.
