I am just a small guy trying to run a small online balloons sales site for extra pocket change. My overhead is very low only $7.95 for hosting. One or two fair size sales is all I need to break even, and before Google it was easily done especially I offend a had to get product to the public even though it is a niche market and also since I run it out of my home I can offer my good at a very completive price. I can only afford perhaps $15.00 a month.

No need to rehash my grievances but both Google on the corporate end and DMOZ on the open source end is an abject failures. My business is stuck between a rock and a hard place. The question is what to do about it.

I am writing off Google and DMOZ. The question is what other alternatives to advertise my site. I am not going to waste my time conforming my site to a search engine that will not list me any higher. I plan to play aggressively with my small size. I.E. Saying I have the best deals that are not listed on Google or because I do not spend hundred of dollars on expensive Pay Per Click or Advertising, I can offer a completive pricing on my products.

If you need Google and the ODP to actually have a business, then you have already failed.

There are plenty of other search options other than those two - many much easier to get listed in.

Outside of that, you might try e-mail blasts - not returning huge numbers overall lately, but if you only need one or two sales, it might be the ticket - do your research, though. This will cost more than $15/month - and if it does cost that little it won't work.

Look at network advertising, too - typically you can good exposure, but again, more than $15.

Places like Mamma.com offer PPC accounts which show ads (actual ads other than text) and offer low entry levels to open accounts - typically $50 to start, then you bid for placements - a good banner might just get you 3 or 4 conversions a month depending on the product & copywriting.

If you need Google and the ODP to actually have a business, then you have already failed.

I might be missing the point on this one, but if your business model relies on volume of traffic to succeed, then these two places would be very important for your business - this would, in my experience, apply more to ad-sales based sites and less to product selling sites. I'd suggest it's important to both as traffic is needed for either model to produce...that's why I think I'm just not getting the meaning behind that post. sad
