In these days of Link-Vault dominance is there any advantage to the more traditional, rather time intensive, reciprocal linking methods?

I think google does not recognize backlinks that have been created within a very shrt time. BTW, hits on your site seems to be raising ranking

I'm pretty sure that Google no longer values recipricol links. There were just too many scams that it's no longer a reliable measure of anything.

Now, if we go back to the late 90's, then lets exchange some links and get to the top page! wink
