Design it very well, provide exceptional content, and actively locate and request links from sites that already have traffic.

You could use some traffic exchanges. I know it is a pain to earn credits by clicking but it is a good method to build and opt-in list. Give away some targeteed freebies and collect names and emails. This way you can eventually launch an email campaign to drive prospected consumers to your web site.
You also need good content and themed Back links of course.
Write some articles and submit them with your links in the resources box.
Good Luck to you,
Jack

To get traffic to your site, submit your site in directories, update content regularly, add fresh content, prepare blog, & most important use proper keywords. Use targeted keywords in your content. All these points will help you in getting traffic to your site.

Well, it all starts with QUALITY CONTENT. Make sure you stock your site with compelling information that your prospective customers would be interested. Make sure you write them in such a way that Search Engines can find them easily.
Everything else will revolve around your content. Excerpt it (link to it) at sites where your target customers are already gathering. Create a newsletter out of it. The possibilities are endless.

As for generating traffic to your site:
First, embark on a solid article marketing strategy by writing unique high-value articles about your site topic and submitting those articles to other sites, ezines, etc. Do this on a regular, consistent basis. Have a resource box at the bottom of each article that contains your site's URL.
Then embark on a link building strategy to get other quality sites to link to your site.
Doing so will generate targeted traffic directly from all the inbound links AND improve your search engine ranking (which will also bring in more traffic).
Once you have the traffic, be sure to have profitable sales copy to convert the traffic to paying customers.
Of course, underlying all of this is the assumption that you have a product (or products) that your target market actually wants and will pay for. If you're trying to sell a product nobody wants, all the traffic in the world won't do anybody any good!

You can't go wrong with starting a blog, tagging the posts with technorati and pinging with pingoat.
I just started a blog two weeks ago and I've already been getting 120+ visitors each day and growing.
Just make sure you are giving good, valuable information on your blog.

Writing articles is a very good way to draw traffic to your site. It is free and fun if you can get the hang of it the right way.
If you can manage to formulate a strategy for writing article you will not have to BUY traffic. Besides when you buy traffic it is a hit a miss. It is not targeted to your website.
A Few Tips to help you get the idea, and do some research on this subject.
Planning is key, and what message you want to convey in your article.
That should be a start to constructing your article.
Setting out what you want to say, practice by writing one without concentrating too much on the construction. You need to write freely and have the confidence to conjure/add more without loosing track of your article.
Anymore ideas?.

I simply want to agree with some of the other writers here---writing articles is a truly easya nd effective way to get traffic to your site. It may be slow at first, but once they are out there, there is solid traffic. I also find that the traffic is of a higher quality --tends to convert nicely.

I just read the original post again and want to comment on how to get "that traffic to become real customers". More important than getting traffic is their experience when they arrive on your site.
Most sites are not designed effectively and do not turn traffic into "real customers" consistently if at all. I've compiled some excellent information on doing that in a thread here called Designing Web Sites for Higher Sales.
I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to meet visitors' expectations. It is very easy for them to click and go somewhere else if it isn't clear how a site offers what they're seeking.

I have a site and want to add a blog page. What is the easiest way to do that? I wanted to use blogger.com. But I didn't see how to make it a part of my domain (www.mydomain.com/blog) OR give it the look and feel of my existing website.
I am sure there is an easy answer to this.

That is getting pretty helpful. So I can publish my blog content to my web server and format it there after receiving it. So my blog is sitting in my blog folder on my webserver as html files? what is the best way to reformat or include these files after receiving them?
Also does that mean the blog exists in two places? Won't it get dinged for duplicate content?
I appreciate your guidance.

Hey Moderators!
Was my last question confusing or stupid? Cab you see the last question? Are there any clarifications necessary?

I never used blogger.com service; so can't give 100% correct answers. But I will try:
So my blog is sitting in my blog folder on my webserver as html files?
I guess, you are right.
what is the best way to reformat or include these files after receiving them?
Why do you want to reformat pages on your server? I think, you should do it on blogger.com and then publish it on your server.
Also does that mean the blog exists in two places?
I guess, you are right again.
Won't it get dinged for duplicate content?
May be. Don't submit your blogger.com url to anywhere; then you may be safe.
HTH.

Another way to draw people to your websight is advertising on Ezines or writing them.
