Ok lets face it... If you have a message board you use for community building and you love it your gonna think your choice is the best for everyone and all times...

I admit despite my more objective posting in the topic in this forum "Choosing Forum Software" I have strong favorites and some I do not like.

So lets do it. Lets do the battling boards thang. Just a few ground rules
1. No more than 2 Posts suggesting the superiority of a particular message board can be made in a row.--The point here is dialogue not business promotion

2. When putting foward a board explain how you have used it to build your community and what you find unique and superior about the boards you choose. Since different sorts of communities will have different goals please tell us the sort of online community you run or participate in for which this really works.

My favorites and least favorites

hehehe--I'll tell you soon....

Let's say I wanna buy a small number of CPM ads on a regular basis. I'd be looking to spend only between $100 and $300 monthly and ideally get a purchase price of $1 CPM.

Fastclick won't talk for less than $1000 monthly. Burst for $2500.

So. What are my options? I realise that I could approach individual websites to strike a deal. Any thoughts on where to go?

Any smaller networks better suited?

does anyone know of a good tool I could use to run through a list of email addresses to check for duplicates and/or merge 2 lists without allowing dups

*text file delimited by comma or 'CR'

thanks

Hello,

I'm the owner of http://echowebhq.com/ (EchoWeb Network) and recently I was thinking of holding a contest as a way to attract publicity for my site.

Anyway, I talked to my host (HostRocket.com) and they are willing to provide me with 3 free, web hosting accounts. Since, my network gets over 150,000 exposures/month, I can also spend about 100,000 button exposures on the winners.

Anyway, the question is: What kind of a contest could I hold which could attract a couple of hundreds applicants?

Basically, I want to have 3 winners:

1st Place:
50,000 button exposures
5 months of free web hosting (200 megs, 10 GIGS)

2nd Place:
25,000 button exposures
3 months of free web hosting (100 megs, 8 GIGS)

3rd Place:
10,000 button exposures
3 months of free web hosting (50 megs, 4 GIGS)

So... any ideas?

Boris

Maybe this is not the right place to ask this, but here it goes. Has anyone out there tried any alternative forms of promotion? Such as, print newspaper classifieds, bumper stickers, radio adds? If so, how are they, or did they work for you? Or do you have other suggestions for alt advertising?

Hello,

HTML is great to have in your e-mail, but what about quick Flash animations that take up little bandwidth, little code and add a whole new dimension to your advertising campaign?

I'm thinking of developing a digital product that shows people exactly how to create your own animated ads that could be sent out as an e-mail or used on their site, or even as a standalone door page.

What do you think?

Do you think it will improve people's response rates by using Flash advertising?

Do you think there is a need for such a product like this?

All the instructions on how to create these animated ads would be presented in simple easy to follow stages. I'm also thinking of including templates that can be easily customised.

Is there any mileage in an idea like this?

I can see a great potential for joint ventures with online copywriting courses and Marketing programs

I would greatly value any feedback, comments or advise.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks!

Brian Terry

Have you looked at The Ad Stop lately? There might be something here: http://www.theadstop.com/ that might help you.

What about just sorting the addresses alphabetically in Microsoft Excel. Then you would run a simply formula in the column next to it that would check to see if there are duplicate email addresses right next to each other. The if statement would look something like this: =if(A1=A2,"duplicate","") You would put this formula in cell b2 and copy it all the way down column B.....

If you think about this, it works because I do it like this.

Yes, I have used targeted ads in magazines (classified sections) to promote my non-commercial domain. They work, to some extent. As more people catch on to the trick, however, it will become less and less effective. I only wish I had had more money to put into the advertising back when I was doing it.

The problem is the number one protection against virii that perpetuate in email (recommended by MS for Outlook users for example) is to disable any and all scripting from running on incoming emails. That would stop any ActiveX module from being read and run from an email which would leave empty boxes in the emails with disabled flash animations not running in them. Probably a sale-stopper at this point. If MS had a reason to improve OE (they dont) they might fix the problems with scripting running in emails instead of recommending that fix which is your main stumbling block for this idea. Sorry for that news.

well, that is a good idea, but the format of my so called list is a bit wrong I think and I was looking for an easy way to check without fixing the format.

I am using the name field in front of the address and there is no dilimiter between them. not all the addresses have a name to them and I found dup's of an address with different names.

example: (CR delimit)

john <john@coldmail.moc>
rmmcoten@hoyaa.can
tax man <sri@breakmepleae.org>
etc
etc

I was looking for something that could fish out the address and check for dups

I want to keep the members name for a more personal touch and I have not found anything I can import this format into with out manually adding delimiters

I think I'll just bite the bullit and sit down and wear out the comma key

You could consider just gathering names and holding a random drawing -- a sweepstakes.

I think the word "contest" is making people think a little harder. Do you want some type of contest in which you judge entries (rather than pick randomly), such as a graphics contest, or script-writing contest, or Web site design contest, or recipe contest, or something like that?

You will get a much higher return with a random drawing sweepstakes than with a contest. From experience, people tend not to enter many contests because they require more effort to enter.

I think the thing to remember is: your net business is still a business. Just because it's on the 'net do not treat it any differently. Use banners, search engines, links, etc. as an ADDITIONAL source of business - not a replacement. Still do your Yellow Pages, magazine, press, etc. that you would normally use to promote your business.

How about something like NoteTab, which has a word-counting function?

That's probably what I'm gonna do - sweepstakes.

What I had in mind is the following: if a person recommends our network through a psecial script they automatically enter the contest. The more people they recommend, the more chances of winning they have.

I know that there are a lot of scripts that allow to do this but are there any that write all emails in a log file and are easy to modify?

i have no experience with that, but i have seen someone with a sticker on the back of their car with a web address for an unsigned band in the area...that was 2 months ago and i still remembered the address...i just now visited the site. i have no idea if it boosted traffic for them, but hell it got my attention and kept it.

firstmark, I'm looking to send additional traffic to one or more online casinos directories. As to what sites I wish to target, there isn't really a particular area I've got in mind. The only real criteria I have is that I'd like most traffic to be from USA/Europe and age 18+
