I'm down to averaging about 40 cents CPM from Burst this month. No premium ads (though they might claim otherwise). What gives?

If I knew Yahoo was having this tough a time with ads, I'd short the hell out of their stock.

Is it just Burst or is the whole ad market dead?

I was thinking of starting an open source project that will end up competing with products developed by people who are regular visitors to my site. One of which has helped me with my site.

My dilemma is: Do I start a project that I believe will be good for my community at the risk of alienating people in my community?

Tell me if I should be asking this somewhere else

Well, my newletter just hit 1500... thaks to the pop-up script I added (not knowing any java AT ALL psssst thanks RenKen )
So, here's the question.....
I want to know how is the best way to get advertising for the newsletter? How much should I charge for Bi-monthly at 1500? Where should I go to find people that are interested in paying me to include their ad and have it be effective and win-win?

Thank you so much for your time,
chicky

ps. the newsletter is directed toward teachers of child care... filled with lesson plan ideas (if that helps the direction )

I'm thinking of running a competition on my site but wanted people to buy something to enter, in other words, buy something this month and go into the competition. Is there any reason I CAN'T do this?

Question:
I have a mailinglist which people can subcribe to. Once they unsubcribe they don't receive the mailinglist anymore. But I have an archive with those e-mail-adresses.

Now my site will be moved to another www-adress. Would it be spamming if I sended those old-mailinglist-members a message regarding the new internet-adress of my site. I do plan to include in the message a line which says that this is message will be sent only once and they won't receive any further news regarding the site.

Is this spam? These people were once interested in my site and might be interested in visiting the site sometime soon.

Well, I wouldn't say the whole ad market is dead, I'm doing reasonably well with more creative methods of getting advertising and safe-audit does well but I've only recently started to use them.

Do a search for similar sites as yours (not your competitors, though) and e-mail a bunch of them and give them your rates. Or, you could probably post something on your website giving rates for advertising.

Just some ideas...I am sure there are more!

I think there may be. Its kinda like all those sweepstakes on the bubble gum wrappers that say, "no purchase necessary, just send a SASE to the following address for a free game piece". Of course, sending the SASE costs more than buying the bubble gum so nobody does it, but i think you may still be required to.

I would say it is spamming sort off, I keep all email address I get in a database as well and I emailed them about one of my sites changing address, I Guess it is spamming but most of the people I sent the email to thanked me for it.

I made sure I wrote on top of the email though Why they got the email, How they can stop any future emails from me, Not just removing from the database, creating a seperate databse to hold people who never ever want to hear from me and then before I send out an email to my database I remove all the don't ever want to be contacted ever address out of the currant database.

This means I can really reach the people who want to be reached and I will hopefully really cut down alot on people who don't.

It is still a fine line though I figure you could have bad results doing this, So I am very reluctant to do it and only done it once in one and half years and only because I felt it was a neccesity.

Make sure you do not include any advertismnets int he email at all, tell people straight why you emailed them.

I also have it in my TOS /privacy statment that there email address may be used this way, I doubt that helps to much though as alot of people would never read them.

My personal opion is it is still spamming, but in some cases a neccesity but don't be suprised to get some complaints out there and complaints to your isp.

A great way I get subscribers is by submiting my ezine to a directory. The best by far for me was Ruth Townsend's Ezine Directory at http://www.lifestylespub.com

There is a link for publishers to place your ezine for free.

That link has provided about 20% of my new advertisers.

Yes, there are rules that say you MUST provide a way for someone to enter without paying. Once you require someone to purchase something to be entered, that called "consideration," and any type of promotion that includes "consideration" as part of the entry requirements is then considered a lottery, which is then governed by different rules. That's why all of the sweepstakes and contests you see include the statement "No Purchase Necessary.".

WinningWays is exactly right.

If I'm not mistaken, Publisher's Clearing House (they run a sweepstakes) was just caught for supposedly giving better odds to people who bought magazines from them; and there was a rumor that people who didn't buy anything and submitted an entry had their entry thrown out. They got into BIG trouble with the FEDs.

There also might be specific laws that vary from state to state regarding sweepstakes, contests, and prizes. I know that in Vermont you're not required to put a stamp on that envelope that you send (i.e., it's not a SASE but a SAE).

You are spamming.

If I unsubscribed I don't care what changed in your circumstances.

Isn't it that normal Sales or also lower in January/February because people need to pay their bills. I'm not sure but this might have affect on advertising results.

I have tried both BurstMedia and ValueClick and I receive much better results with ValueClick. My average CTR is 3ith ValueClick (non-targeted ads)
So I recommend ValueClick instead of BurstMedia.
If you check out ValueClick please click here
Else go straight to ValueClick.com
