Why in the world is a CMGI company, Altavista, using Doubleclick to serve its ads? Why don't they use AdSmart or Engage?

I am just ramping up our companies e-mail strategy and was wondering if anyone has a check-list of things we should be doing?

When I say we're just getting started, I mean just that. We're trying different templates for messages, different subject lines, segmenting the databse, etc.

But first I want to make sure we have covered the basics like:

How do I set up my list to develop an opt in. Most of my list came from an out side source. reliable, but outside. Since these folks will be new to me, I want to ask their permission to continue to contact them. Is it as simple as "All those who say yes go in this pile...", etc.?

...and is it reasonable to periodically ask folks to re-opt-in, say every 6 - 12 months?

This site is great if you want to turn 300 hundread visitors a day into 500-800 a day. It will increase your traffic anywhere between 50-200% the more traffic you have, the more traffic you shall get, especially with the buy credits option, where you can earn credits and trade them in for traffic, simply by reffering webmasters. http://www.freevisits.com/
Check it out, real easy, doesn't affect your viewers/surfers in any way!

I would probably go about it this way...If I had a list that I was comfortable I could contact, and had some type of documentation, then I would send a welcome email, explain my reason for emailing them, and provide a unsubscribe link in my email. If I had any question about the list, then I would still email them, but ask that they re-opt by clicking a link or sending a reply email with "subscribe" or "OK" in the Subject field. Since the receiver of the email can safetly be assumed to be the addressee, this single opt-in method is acceptable. A list server would probably be of assistance also,
if you are mailing something like a newsletter. I would go to www.ezinemanager since they are a full service company and only charge like $5.00 a month for a few thousand subscribers. You can use their form to collect emails on your website or use the links they put on your emails to sub and unsub. Updating your list periodically is fine, but you need to be prepared to loose maybe 25 to 30 percent of your subscriber total. Try offering them something free to update info...hope this helps a little.

Yeah but you see, 50% or 0 is 0. That's the crappy thing about those kinds of sites.

Read this on the wire

They have a contract with Doubleclick till I believe the year 2001.

Altavista signed with doubleclick before CMGI acquired them

But with CMGI consolidating all it's web properties, one just has to wonder if it's for altavista

They're a Doubleclick Select site, meaning they do have an exclusive (likely a lengthy one). If Doubleclick is doing a good job, I don't see a reason for Altavista to join Adsmart even when their contract runs out.

It's kind of like saying Flycast should switch over to AdForce. If it doesn't get the job done as well (and believe me, AdForce doesn't come near Adex in my experience), there's no reason to bother.
