I have recently started a home based business and would like to advertise on the web. I have a webpage that explains my product, etc. I don't have a lot of extra money to promote it. Does anyone have any good leads of places I can use to promote my site? I am interested in email advertising but don't really understand it and heard it can get expensive. Thanks

I ran into an interesting problem with Burst today that I haven't encountered previously. Apparently, Burst shut off half of my adcodes (only 6 of the 13 letters in a-m codes are working). Basically, if I can't use multiple adcodes, someone else gets the ads without me even considering Burst, so I'd suspect it'd be in Burst's best interest to not suddenly make ads ineffective. (Note: traffic is far from an issue for me, though individual codes do go down from time to time when I switch sites to networks other than Burst. At times when these codes are active, they, of course, easily pass the minimum.) Has anyone else experienced this situation?

Depending on what type of site you've got, taking out a classified at Fark.com can lead to serious traffic. We did it and got very high traffic. That said, our site was particularly suited to their audience - males, 18-30, mainly US. The critical thing is to write a good ad, and for whatever you are advertising to be interesting. Crap sites won't go down well. The community there have the right to comment on your ads, so beware of that. Also put your site name in the advert, so even if people don't click immediately, they may still remember you. Humour and women are the top priority there. Anything cool is considered good. The price is $25 for a week and that puts you in front of anywhere between 70,000 to 100,000 people. Their individual visitor numbers are now around 400,000/months. We got about 3,500 individual visitors, plus an increased ongoing flow. The community is interconnected, so if you site is good/cool it might get picked up and blogged/posted elsewhere. I recommend this with a disclaimer - this is great if your site is relevant to a young, 'cool', males audience. Don't bother otherwise. http://www.fark.com/ http://www.fark.com/classifiedad.shtml

First, yes, email advertising can get very expensive ... because unsolicited email (called "spam") will destroy your business reputation on the Web. I would skip this one.For where to promote, check out the front page of VirtualPromote. Jim has all kinds of useful stuff there. And check out the Search Engine forums. Done correctly, your pages will get decent listings in the major search engines, which is a prime source of free promotion. Good luck!

This may or may not be the answer to your question, but Burst! announced that they will be cancelling all ad codes which doesn't see what they considered a sufficient amount of traffic. I cannot remember what that level was but I do believe I read it at Burst!s web site...I think it was contained in the new services tour that you'll find in the member's services section.

Start your own opt-in list. It doesn't have to be a long ezine. It could be a short daily tip. This is the best and cheapest way to advertise. The cost is time and creativity. You can host it free to see if it works out for you. You will need to promote it to get subscribers. But you are going to promote your page anyway, so this isn't an extra thing on your To Do list.

That's more than likely it (I let some adcodes go basically without use from time to time when I shift sites to better performing ads). Oh well, guess I'll just have to direct traffic elsewhere rather than giving it to Burst.

Fark's traffic is something like 85-90% US. It is just a massive community of people that want a bit of a laugh. Sort of your FHM or Loaded crowd. As stated, just make sure your site is a good fit. Oh yeah, the guys that run it will give you advise on the text for the ad, so it has the best chance of being effective. In answer to your other question. 'The word Fark doesn't mean anything. It's a word Drew used instead of saying **** in chat rooms and online games back in the early 90s. He became known for saying it at random intervals just for the hell of it, so one day in late 1997 he decided to go out and register the domain.' http://www.fark.com/farq/about.shtml

The comment below is a snip from an email received 12th Feb from Burst------As of February 12, 2000, any secondary adcodes that are older than 45 days and have less than 2400 monthly impressions will be marked inactive. BURST! urges you to consolidate the traffic with other active adcodes to make the remaining even more attractive to advertisers.------- Hope this answers the problem, if you didn't get the mail I suggest you contact Burst.

jpa, I did not see anywhere where their stats are public. Where are you getting the statistical information?

http://www.fark.com/advertise.shtml That is their ad page, but the stats are a bit old I think. 'In October, Jupiter Media Matrix began covering Fark.com. They estimate that over 270,000 people visit Fark at least once each month. Today we average more than 220,000 impressions per day and 6.5 million impressions a month.' I was told that they are now getting up around 400,000 to 500,000 per month.

I have to admit, I am pleasantly surprised. My site (humor site) has received over 2,200 visitors, and the classified ad has been up a little over 24 hours. Not a bad investment, I must say. I'm wondering just what the hit count will be after a week.

After I submitted the payment via Paypal, the ad went live in 2 - 3 hours. (I'd submitted payment about 3 or 4pm MST.)

After reading this, I tried it out. Hey for $25 it's pretty low risk. I posted it on Thursday, so after 4 days I have 500 clickthroughs. Doesn't look like a lot of buyers, but the brand is out there to 500 more people.Brian

Well, it's almost the end of the week. Hehe. I don't think I've had so many people rag on my site. (Which I can understand...I think there is a lot of room for improvement.) But whether it was curiousity or something else, I still got over 6,000 hits via the classified ad. That means I spent less than half a cent per visitor. Not a bad deal, I must say. I will have to try things again after I improve my site. I guess that--all in all--a majority of the "comments" slammed my site, but ROI from this will have me laughing about this all the way to the bank. I easily made the $25 through banners and TAF forms) to cover the damages.

unless i got 0 traffic, he hasn't listed my site yet, so the 2-3 hours bit is not mine ... i'll send him a note, he might be drinking my beer money first...
