I got specific to backup my claim of the 3:1 performance advantage. You're correct in that, in 99% of the circumstances, c/c++ is faster (much faster) than perl. I had to get detailed to clarify the point.

As far as google goes, I'm not sure how they're setup now. I know that originally they were 100% C++, but with their clustering setup, I think that some of it's actually done in assembly language now.

FreeBSD is a bit slower (maybe 20-30%) than TurboLinux (and most other Linuxes as well).

Proponents of FreeBSD and BSD claim that it's a more stable and secure system.

IMO, TurboLinux has done the best job of any LinuxDistro in those areas, so it really boils down to your personal preference and comfort levels.

HAHA.

I'm working on it. If only there were 40 hours in a day, and my wife didn't care if I were to work 30 of them....

Check out www.hitsgalore.ws It's running on the rewrite of our software. You can do some basic searching and speed checks there, but the account center is not yet complted.

Hi all... first post

Just for reference, it doesn't always take 20,000 servers to run a google - wisenut.com indexes close the same amount of sites, seems to run as fast and runs on about 300 servers I believe... big difference! I seem to remember hearing that google was built on vast amounts of smaller machines. It uses some nifty technology for minimizing database size such as ignoring common elements on pages like top and left nav bars (compressing rather than ignoring) throughout sites. They may still be running their "coding contest" where quite a few clues were exposed so to speak...

C!
