We've always handled a stable of local clients and have just started branching out to some new clients in different parts of the country. Waiting for checks to mail and clear is a hassle and taking credit card payments would be the preferable way to handle things.

We've looked into Quickbooks online which lets you process credit cards along with handling your other financial needs, but are curious what other options are available and what folks think of different methods and companies.

So, anyone care to share their experiences with online merchant accounts? Anyone you recommend? Anyone you don't? Any type of service that you have had luck with?

Ideally, we'd like to find an account that we could use to take payments across several sites (so that our clients can use it on their sites as well) rather than setting up multiple merchant accounts.

    I'd appreciate your thoughts...

Merchant account providers process CC orders for a fee. Usually for a percentage. They base the percentage on the level of financial risk and volumn of sales.

Chargebacks/cancellations and fraudulant use occur at varying rates across the different industries. Adult websites can be charged up to a whopping 25% because of this!

It would be diffcult to find a merchant account provider to accept a group of business for one flat rate. They all would have different levels of risk and volumn.

I'd get a referral program going with a fair and easy to deal with merchant account provider.

Good info, thanks. I can see where there would be a variance of rates depending on the type of business, especially if you are talkign something like a gambling site or adult sites.

For now, we're giving Wells Fargo a try. They came pretty highly recommended and they do have a nice trust factor due to their history, so we'll see how it goes.

There is a hidden cost if you have to provide your own SSL, certificate, and gateway. Echo-inc is set up to provide all of this for a fee when you have activity in a month.

We've got the SSL certificate taken care of, we just needed a processor, but that's good to know!

Costco has a merchant account service for executive members. The rate is pretty inexpensive compared to other providers I researched. I don't know where you are located so this may not be a viable option, but we've been happy with it.
