Internet Retailer has an interesting article right now about how many large brick and mortar stores that also sell their products online are finding it beneficial to build kiosks in their stores so that users can still search their catalog.

Think about it...how often have you gone to Barnes & Noble and not been able to find the book you want, but you can do it online in a flash. Same for shopping at Home Depot, or Target. We're so used to "searching" via an engine, that the idea of looking for the product is tiresome.

Has anyone tried this in real life? Either using a kiosk within a store to do a search, or actually setting this up for their own business? I know that our local library has kiosks all over the place. I can search for any book, movie or CD that I want and it will tell me if it's in stock, where it's at, etc... If they don't have it, they'll put me on a waiting list and email me when it's available.

Imagine if you could do all your in-store rain checks through kiosks. That could save a lot of customer service time. Or, how often has someone from your store had to go check the stock-room to see if something is there...with the kiosk, your customer could do it for themselves...

    What are your thoughts?

Excellent idea as you know men don't like asking for directions smile. Moses was in the desert for 40 years after all.

It's kind of a natural next step from the idea of "shop for it online, pick it up at the store."

Best Buy does this. It's very nice...no sales people to deal with, do your own research, pick out what you want, order it, drive five minutes to the store, pick it up. I LOVE it.

The idea that I could do this same thing from within the store is excellent.

Oh...now my mind is having visions of giant automated warehouses with these kiosks setup out front. You come in, shop for what you want, the giant computer arm retrives it like in a vending machine, it comes out at the checkout counter and off you go.
