My opinion about online websites and the marketing factor all together, is confusion. Four years ago when I set out to earn money online by having website, my intentions were directed and focused on one thing, EARN MONEY. Naturally, as with any tool of communication, the individual must know how to work the unit. Kind of like the telephone. The needed abilities for proper use include finger movement, number to call, polite manners, presence on the opposite side, and a reason for calling. These basic features have become a primary way of life for the user. Now let's look at a website in comparison. Websites are becoming an everyday part of our society because they serve as a
way of life for so many. In order to be included with this group of "so many", it's going to cost you money. Well, we know that from the start, but how much, is the deciding factor. Ok, however you want your website to perform decides another factor. In fact, too many factors are involved for alot of people, when all they wanted to do was to make money. As for me, I consider myself your average and intelligent person, but will I have to learn
another language to have a decent site ? You mean I need to
study diagrams, ROI, SEO, PPC, etc...? Wow. Now I can see that this is going to be a timely investment, as well as a financial investment, in which I have no clue of what the outcome may bring ! This cycle of behavior is among a majority of people that want to be successful on the internet. It reminds me of climbing a tree, in which all the limbs are stable from the outside, but termites have eaten the core on so many that you become weary of which ones are stable and which ones are not. The early climbers have already made a pathway to the top which enables
them to be leaders, if they so choose. If they choose not to become leaders, as in they just want a EARN MONEY with a website, they have unknowingly stepped into a downward path to seclusion. In order to avoid seclusion, must we learn all about formula's, and search engines, just to earn money with a website ? That would eliminate alot of my confusion, as well it would for many others to. Thanks for bringing this out in me, as growth I'm sure, will follow !

" must we learn all about formula's, and search engines, just to earn money with a website? "
No. Like anything else in life, you can pay an expert to do stuff you don't know how to do or haven't the time to do eg you can take your car to the dealer to get serviced or you can learn how to service it and then do the servicing, yourself.
As you have found, there are many aspects to operating a web business, successfully. Very few people have the expertise to do everything required well so they use tools and outsourcing to cover the areas they don't have the expertise or the time, to cover.
Even large businesses with huge budgets can't afford to cover all areas properly, so all businesses then have to prioritize their wish list of improvements they would like to make to their website/business. As an example, you may be fully aware that the look of your site could be significantly improved but you just can't justify a $3,000 makeover at this time.
As far as getting targeted traffic to your site, you can either spend a huge number of hours learning how to optimize, optimizing, keeping up to date with all the changes and then re-optimizing, or you can pay an expert to do it for you. Another alternative is to pay for Pay per Click advertising on various search engines or better still, use a combination of SEO and PPC.
Unfortunately, small businesses generally remain small or close, due to capital and knowledge limitations.
So, if you just want to earn money, get experts to do the work for you. Howver, you will need to do an ROI analysis on all budgeted expenditure because you will go broke (as demonstrated by all the dot bombs in 1999-2002), if your medium term returns (cash and profits) do not exceed the investment.
Hope this helps

I don't think you ever fully understand those details until you just do it.
