I'm in process of starting a small business and would like customers to call something other than my home/cell phone.
Can anyone recommend a service that will provide a mailbox and phone number? Cost is #1 concern, followed by reliability.

We use T-Mobile, Kall8, IDT and Vonage.
T-Mobile is our wireless provider. My GSM phone lets me get my email and check our wap enabled network status pages.
Kall8 provides toll free service with dyanamic routing, so we can redirect the toll free number to the number of our choice. Kall8 also include voice mail to email, so you get your messages as a wav file. We would ditch Kall8 in favor of Vonage, but the toll free number is not transferrable. Kall 8 has some nice scheduling features so that we can auto-route calls to voice mail during off hours.
Vonage is VoIP solution that we use for primarilly for outbound and international calls. The international rates are very competitive. You will need broadband for vonage. The small biz package is $30-50/month for 1500 minutes US/Canada and a dedicated fax line.
IDT has very low long distance rates and the clearest bills of any company I've seen.
If you are just starting out, I do not suggest using a cell phone. The clarity issues become a nightmare. Also, once clients get used to a number they will continue to use it. As the business grows, so will your phone bill.

If you're starting a small business then you're swamped with many tasks. I recommend you use DictoMail voicemail to text messaging. It works with FreedomVoice too. It has all-you-can-eat pricing (which I like). DictoMail converts your voicemail to text and then sends it to your desktop email and/or your cellphone. It saves you the (repetative task) time of logging in to check messages. I can now read messages WHILE I'm in teleconference instead of waiting to get off the call to check voicemail. It saves me a lot of time. Plus I can archive all my messages on my desktop so I can quickly return calls. I think it could greatly help your new business. They offer a free trial and even an interactive ROI calculator.
