I have a very strong knowledge base on how to design, build, and market web sites - 2 1/2 years experience - in fact, it's my job. I currently manage 27 of them for a company that is strictly web-based sales.

The thing is, I want to break out onto my own. How should I go about finding clients? What is the best way to find those who want a website? Should I post on message boards? I've already found one gig through my friend, but I would like to have several more lined up.

I guess what I'm asking is, what do you guys do to find those who want websites built? I'm very motivated, and willing to bust my a$$ - I just need some direction and some advice on how to get started.

    Thanks for your time!

Having a good website is definitely a key. I would say that the best way to finding people who need a website would be businesses that don't have one already--local businesses.

There are many companies out there with websites that are competing for this on a global level, so I would start in your local area first.

I do exactly the same thing.
I find that local businesses are the key. first off, they are local, they pay well (Because most are clueless) and the MOST important thing is that you get your name out , or your "foot in the door".

You would be SO surprised at how much business word of mouth can generate for local businesses. Its a pyramid effect. Do your first site really well. Get to know the manager/owner. When its all done and he is happy, just ask him to mention you if he hears of anyone else looking for a website. I had to actually set up my own company to cope with the work I have taken on and hire many people. Seriously, work hard and it will pay off. It just takes time.

While you are waiting, I would suggest freelancing online. There are MANY freelance sites online and most of the big ones are good (elance.com and rentacoder). I would not suggest scriptlance as the webmasters are...well lets just save that for a scriptlance bashing post!

The freelancing can bring in some much needed income AND skill building while you are waiting for the local "Word of mouth" to get around. Also, while freelancing, you meet many people online that are willing to do your "Local" projects for online prices. Your the middleman and there is a MASSIVE potential for income there.

    Hope this helped.

post your freelance profile or a profile for your web design/development firm. it's an hour of work and who knows you might be contacted by a prospective employer sometime. some of the sites that let you do it are: http://www.devbistro.com (free), http://www.firmlist.com (free), http://www.designfirms.org (free but a link back is required).

    good luck,
    james
