Hi,

I am building a search engine - which I can do, being a techie - but am stuck on the business model - being a techie. Can someone help me with some advice about how to put this together. I have created a spreadsheet that estimates audience size, likely reach per million customers, no. of pages viewed, no. of ads served etc. per month. But I'm not sure of the right way to estimate revenue.

Would be grateful for any advice

Thanks

Simon

IMO, you should make your search engine popular first. Then you should start thinking the ways to earn money from it.

First step is too difficult and need lot of money.

Second step is very easy and you need good bank(s) to keep all your money. smile

Yes - I understand that. However, I wanted help and advice with understanding the search engine business model - i.e., how do SEs estimate how much revenue they will make over a year, for example.

masidani, the only way I can think of forecasting your SE revenue generating ability is by collecting statistics about your past month's of income and seeing how much of an increase you get over a 6 month period or a year's period of time. Only then can you start to project your future earnings. You also need to keep an eye on your competition too as they affect your viewership which directly relates to earnings. It's a complicated formula, but only past statistics can forecast your financial future. Start collecting stats on earnings and take note of increases and determine what you did that made it increase or decrease the earnings.

You have some stiff competition if you are wanting to compete in the major SE market of Google and company--of course you probably know that.

The search engine business model is extremely simple:

ADVERTISING

If you listen to Marketplace or read the Journal, you'd know that Google is basically an advertising company, from the financial perspective. Since a "Business Model" primarily means "how does this business structure make money over a 5 year period?" - I assume this is what you're after.

Most people see search engines as a technology. And they are. But I agree with the earlier post, you will have a GREAT GREAT difficultly getting significant traffic to your search engine and need an air-tight plan for overcoming that major challenge FIRST. You need to have good tech, but without a strong marketing plan, even the best technology-based business model will fail. You see it all the time when a superior product fails to take first place in the market.

Hope this helps. I've built business plans before if you'd like more discussion on the topic.
