While I am aware everyone wants to get rich quick. Let's face it. We all would love that.
What I would like to ask is this. How long would it take to reach about US$100 a month in advertising revenue. I see that as a realistic level where the site would pay it fees(hosting and the extras).
My background is business consulting. I am prepared to fill the site with good quality content, and will work on it with my girlfriend for about 30 to 40 hours a week between us.
If I read and learn every post here and pay attention to people who are intelligent, as I always should, is 6, 9 or 12 months a reasonable time frame to reach that level?

On the far end of this, is it realistic to expect to ever earn more than US$1,000 per month from ads on your site.

Please assume I am a person with a brain and willing to listen to advice, work hard, and fix or improve anything that is broken.

Thankyou in advance.

P.S. I stumbled across this site accidentally, and I am in HEAVEN!!!! Thankyou.

Rob

Hi Rob and welcome.....

You have the right thought to make this work. Allow me to share.

When I did my first web site - I had the "build it and they will come thought" - did not happen lol Like you I found this site and used it like my web guide bible. I studied it like I was in college and going for a MD lol wink

My next site was quite successful - I would say in about 4 months I was making 600 + a month, but I still had a LOT more to learn. Bad hosting cost me everything ! and back to the drawing board I was again.

Do not be afraid to ask any question here - of course use the search features first to see if you can find your own answers. Never Never think you are done learning - this field is in a constant state of change.
So I guess what I am trying to say is - if this is not a passion of yours - it will soon become too much like work.

OK to your specific question ( finally lol ) I don't think there is a set answer - sorry.
It depends on your subject area - your design and SEO knowledge and a dusting of good luck.

If you add your site to your profile me and others may be able to help you more smile

By ads do you just mean Google Ads? If so, it takes quite a lot to earn that sort of money. However, if you mean selling outbound links too (at the very least) then it depends on the subject matter of your site e.g. if the site content is all about bassoon playing, then your outbound links would be of value to sites associated with music, musical instruments etc. so your links would not be of value to say lawn mowing and garden services sites. What I am trying to say is that of 2 sites with identical rankings, PR etc. in totally different businesses e.g bassoon playing and free poker (gambling) advice, it is likely that links from the latter site would sell for multiples of 10s, perhaps even a hundred times as much as the bassoon playing site (one reason being that to obtain that ranking for the gambling site, 20-100 times as much work may have been required to get the same rankings [because gambling is an exceedingly competitive area of the Internet]).

As Beth indicated, there is no set answer.

30-40hrs per week should be rewarded smile

If you are investing that amount of time then I would expect to at least see a comfortable income for one who has a brain and wants to use it. smile

And at least more income than what would be made in a paid job...afterall it is a business and people do business to make an income so they don't have to work for others.

Most start up businesses do, however, spend more time to get established, so what could you do better to acheive more for say 50 hours per week?

Thank you all for your quick replies. I do realise my question was asking how long is a piece of string, but I also realise that the question also provokes all of you to say things that provide me with additional ideas.

This site truly is incredible. It is probably the first site I have come across where I am not even sure where to start reading because there is so much to learn.

I have a voracious appetite for knowledge and this site will bog me down for about a month of reading. I am looking forward to that.

As you said, outbound advertising will strengthen income quite well. My goal is to become one of the lucky "laptop and a phoneline" work anywhere in the world people.

As for the 40 hours a week combined between my girlfriend and I, that is what I can forecast as a minimum commitment we can actually offer. Obviously there is a need to generate conventional offline income to fuel the site and to live. But I do appreciate your comments that longer hours will reap extra rewards.

Again, I thank those who have already provided answers and assistance and I look forward to further advice in the future.

Rob
