    Hi,

I have just been browsing using msn for keywords that will list my site. The site is about a uk b&b. I have searched in msn.com and I am listed on page 1 for many of my search terms but this is not the case on msn.co.uk My url ends in .com simply becasue the .co.uk extension was not available could someone tell me how to get my url ranked higher in msn uk?? I have paid for inclusion using inktomi and my site is hosted by webfusion in the uk.

    Many thanks

MSN uses a geo-targetting filter when showing Inktomi results which is based on domain, not site location. This means that if you have a .com site (viewed as US/international) you will have a site which should do better than a .co.uk in the US/International version of MSN. A .co.uk should do better than a .com in MSN UK. However, this is not an exclusion filter - it is a bias filter. No sites are removed - and if you are a world-beating site in terms of link-popularity and other on and off-page criteria you can still appear in the top selections on all MSNs.

You surest way of appearing on MSN UK is probably to get a LookSmart UK listing. These appear above Inktomi results and no geo-targetting is done. Any site accepted into LS UK is seen as being a UK site.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. I will look into getting a listing on looksmart asap.

I have checked into this and having paid nearly £50 for inktomi and fast, plus the £100 hosting fees, I cannot at this time justify another £179 as it is a new business. Perhaps a little later on I will submit to them too. Is there any cheaper ways to get a better listing in msn.co.uk?

    Many thanks for your time.

You really need to bite the bullet and pay the179 pounds - as makemetop says, the surest way of appearing on MSN UK is via LookSmart.
