Any answers for scottfla? The only sure way I know to get into the MSN results right now is Overture. Everything else is up in the air, I think.

Pay to be in the MSN directory?
Very few people search on this directory but the results do appear sometimes in the MSN results. They come from LookSmart and are charged for on a CPC basis. Submission is via them. Not really worth it now, IMO.

This is just from Bruceclay, hope it helps. The results on the msn search page come from
Primary Results - Looksmart
Secondary Results - Inktomi
Paid Results - Overture (generally on top of all the rest)
Looksmart and Overture - Pay per click inclusion
Inktomi - Free or paid inclusion
In my Opinion
Overture - Almost always worth it
Looksmart and Inktomi - Depends on how you work them.
Regards

Mike, Thanks for "kicking it" and makemetop and greenleaves for your help. I'll forgo the MSN and look into the Overture. Will this still be relevant when MSN's new engine kicks in? Thanks again, Scott

Scott, EVERYTHING at MSN is up in the air. My guess is that MSN's relationship with Overture will last for quite some time (a year or more) until they're ready to tackle managing their own pay-per-click program.
So in the meanwhile, if you want to kill a few birds with one stone, Overture gets you to the top of MSN (assuming you bid enough on your keywords) and it gets my many other important places, namely the top of the Yahoo results. Managing an Overture PPC bid campaign is very easy to get started with, and you can easily turn it off any time you like if you're not happy with it.
This will ensure you're in the sponsored area of the results, and you can take some time to work on improving natural results in general. Whatever you do for the natural (organic) results for Google and Yahoo is likely to help you down the line with MSN as well.

I think Bruce needs to update his page. Primary results no longer come from L$ as standard.

MakeMeTop: "I think Bruce needs to update his page. Primary results no longer come from L$ as standard."
Then who provides the primary results, overture or inktomi or another one?
Also, I know this doesn't mean Looksmart is going to provide the primary results, but: "Additionally, LookSmart recently signed an agreement with Microsoft to continue providing LookSmart search results to MSN for periodic use at its discretion." at http://www.shareholder.com/looksmart/releaseDetail.cfm?ReleaseID=130787 and then on the looksmart page http://listings.looksmart.com/home/basics.jhtml, no MSN.
I have such a headeach, and no time to sit and think it over.
Regards

Looks like MSN will be sticking with Overture for a little while longer at least...

The Inktomi Slurp got renamed to Yahoo! Slurp and is part of what is called Yahoo! Search Technology.
Yahoo! Search Technology now backends the following:
* Yahoo!
* The previous Inktomi distribution network
* AltaVista and the previous distribution network
* AlltheWeb / Fast and the previous distribution network
Hope that helps.
