Ok here is a thought, I am doing some work for a japanese company and have come across a slight problem.

    here a 2 phrases

    a)私は為替が好きです (i like fx)
    b)私は為替取引が好きです (i like fx trading)

now say I wanted to optimise for fx which is 為替 in japanese is google going to pick it up as there are no spaces between the words?

As this is the way japanese is written what can I do? Any suggestions.

I would strongly suggest searching on Google to see by using just the 為替 characters and see what happens.

    I would - but I can't - it comes out as ??

As you know there are no spaces in any Japanese text. Google does just fine picking keywords like these out of Japanese text. If you're concerned about focusing on these terms then add some bold tags around the keyword, or make a heading with the keyword in it.
