What is up with Looksmart - a client of mine got over 500 clicks in one day which drained their budget as soon as they were back online. It's the same every month but each month it's a different set of referrers. As far as I can tell, we get very few sales from these sites. Also, Looksmart is telling us we need to increase our budget to $840 per month in order for us to stay online for the whole month. Something seems awfully fishy here...anyone have any similar experiences?

If you're not getting the sales (and a good ROI) then I wouldn't continue. It could be due to an increase in click-thru bandits or fraudulent clicks, but without investigating it there's no way to tell.
Whether it's Looksmart or any other means of paying for traffic to your site, if you're not getting a great ROI from it then I wouldn't continue doing it.

I took get spikes of suspicious traffic. But not only from looksmart from all ppcs, with the expections of google, overture and searchfeed. Profits from ppcs are not constant, and I do take losses on some campains in some periods of time, but looking at it from a one to two month ROI tracking, I do well. I find sometimes I have to hang in to a specific ppc, then the trafic gets better.
I would sugest that if you are getting any ROI at all, keep in there. I have seen spikes in goclick traffic and once they even re-emberced me for some traffic they admited to be junk. Even with the spikes I do well. It took me quite a bit of time of breaking even and loosing from kanoodle and enhance before I pulled the listings.

We get a message from Looksmart every couple of months stating on how our account is getting low on funds and how they are sending directed traffic to our site. Personnaly, have never ever seen a single click from Looksmart or a Looksmart data fed search engine. Of course, can't write them back about this, they charge for answering emails.

I've never heard of Looksmart charging for their calls except for the fact that they don't have a toll-free number. I use ClickTracks and tag Looksmart so I do see a lot of clicks from affiliates but have rarely seen sales coming from them.

USE ROI TRACKING TOOLS and ANALYZE your stats.
Some of the smaller PPC's may actually do better since they can offer a more personal service.
Your PPC campaign is only as good as YOU make it. If you work hard and understand the networks you are advertising on then YOU can make it succeed. If however you don't trust the arrangements before hand you won't trust your results and you won't put forth the effort you need to make it work.
It isn't up to the network to make things work, it is up to YOU understanding YOUR audience and correctly targeting to them and TRACKING your results.
Doesn't matter if its google, overture, looksmart or anyone.

Yes we use tracking tools to analyze our Looksmart stats, cept there are none! We get "billed" for so called delivered clicks that never originate from anywhere or show up in our detailed stats. I truly believe we just get jerked by Looksmart because they have to pay for clicks because of the class action lawsuit they lost a few years back for their practices.
